Most probably a Whale taking profit. Don't be panicked into selling at a loss.
It's a correction -- just a dip before the next push upwards. :)

JP Morgan who bought it at the $3,000 low a month ago (15th Sept if I recall) taking their profits & running? ;)

Am I right in thinking that all this recent growth is speculation led? I honestly can't see where people are spending bitcoin apart from buying things they shouldn't on the dark web.

I would think so, at least some of it. Bitcoin is one of the most volatile "investments" you can buy. Having said that, I don't really believe it is popular because people can spend it in a few places. It seems to be seen more as a store of value, this generations gold if you will. It could all crash and burn of course, but I really do think that over the next decade this will become a serious investment product and its price will increase hugely (after more than one price crash to get there).

The only real threat to it at the moment, as far as I can see, is the possibility of endless forks that could devalue it entirely, or a better coin comes along.

From a newbie investor with €2k to put in, it it worth investing in BTC? I know it's a small amount of money, but it's all I can afford to lose, i.e, it wouldn't harm me to lose €2k.

Meh, it's now €27 Trillion. Suffice it to say, I am emigrating before cashing in and then I'm buying New Zealand.

    I think definitely!

CNBC did a poll and out of over 27,000 people who voted, 49% chose the above $10 K option: https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/20/bitcoin-price-is-heading-to-10000-cnbc-survey-says.html

This chart never fails to impress me:
