Quick one for Nov Starts - any idea how many of us are starting? - just  the 30 I am Guessing?

I guess I'll know when I see you all but I was just curious.

    Thanks

It's hard to tell whether they will stick to calls on the 5 weeks basis i.e both January and February classes would both receive calls pre christmas which would be amazing.

Octobers class knew as far back as June so there is some hope for that.

With as much as almost half that number called being active on the boards and the scores it went down to, statistically speaking it doesnt sound like 30 I think they've bumped the intake size back up to full capacity.
If so next intake should clear all of 59.

Wittyname291 yes another FOI has been put in

Hey guys, back again with another question no doubt that has been answered but I really really need some advice, if its easier whoever can help me out can private message me. I'm only home from spain to a letter saying that I have failed vetting, due to a tattoo behind my ear. A very long time ago I posted on here regarding my tattoos and as the tattoo behind my ear is small and just of the first letter of my name the majority thought that I should pass ok. I have numerous tattoos (some on my wrists aswell) but these all passed the main issue is the one behind my ear, my issue now is that I don't know what I'm supposed to do or where I go from here? Obviously I am sending to appeal, the photo I sent was zoomed in and made the tattoo look much more visible than it is, friends I have had for years don't even know I have the tattoo thats how discreet it is you only notice it if it is pointed out. And to be honest it looks more like a mushroom than a letter (the joys of making a stupid mistake at 17). The thing is I know for a fact I can cover the tattoo easily with makeup (I have the foundation) but I am willing to have it lasered, as its small and just plain black ink I am hoping this could be done easily, my issue is this is my dream career, i did my degree for it and its all i have wanted, my PCA is in the next 2-3 weeks and I will be devastated if a stupid tattoo is the reason that they can turn me away from this, i totally understand why tattoos are an issue but I need someone who has been through this to help me because I haven't a clue where to go from here. Thanks guys

Appeal it, there is an appeals process laid out in the guidance. They should have told you that in the letter.

I am going to appeal it, do you think if I state all as I have said above that they will consider that as grounds for appeal. And will I still go do my PCA etc or because my vetting has failed does that mean they don't want me to go? Maybe I should just ring recruitment

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,620 ✭✭✭Banterbus28

Just explain that you feel it's unfair that other people get in with similar small tattoos on hands etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,620 ✭✭✭Banterbus28

State that you are willing to get it lasered etc and take all reasonable steps to abide by the PSNI uniform policy.

If I were you, I'd try to get booked in for laser treatment asap, and then include a photo of the tattoo after the initial treatment, with your appeal.

Black ink is the easiest to get rid of with a laser and could possibly only take a few treatments, however they recommend a good few weeks in-between sessions to allow your immune system to remove as much of the pigment as possible.

If they can see you are starting the removal process they might uphold your appeal, it's worth a shot anyway.

Deff worth an appeal with all the advice above.

Get it removed ASAP. Appeal and you can physically show them it's gone, or in the process of going depending on time frame. If it's small hopefully it won't take too much work to remove . Although I have heard it's quite painful. Def show up and complete your PCA.

I can see 4 potential outcomes.

    1) Best case scenario. They revise the determination and let you progress to PCA and Medical.

    2) They allow you to progress to PCA and medical but defer entry to GV until laser is done.

    3) They defer PCA and Medical until laser is done.

    4) Worst case scenario they uphold their determination.

    Good luck

Ive had it done on my leg for a big tattoo. Its not painful after the first one or 2 zaps. It works in short pulses not a continuous laser stream. After the first 2 zaps you know what to exoect and its completely fine. Kind of like being flicked by an elastic band. 3 sessions and all the black from a rather large tattoo on my leg was nearly completely gone. Get that booked now. As you may have to wait a few weeks to start it. Then start the appeal process quickly and mention you've had the first session and its fading well and that it would be long gone before you would be starting G'Ville

My only advice is that when you appeal don't be confrontational as that will end in one very final way.

Try and put your case forward based on your circumstances; don't compare to others.

At the very least try to get the option of PCA and then medical where they can get a better look at your tattoo.

Use this time to gather evidence and build a case. If you know anyone who is in the police with similar tattoos get them to give you an account. The more evidence the better.

Posted this a few times but I know of two who failed vetting because of tattoos.

Both offered to cover and laser, supplied character references from local representatives and even one from an MLA and both were still rejected.

I'd personally go see a solicitor for their advice and request for an appeals meeting so someone can actually look at it in person.

I definately think my best option is to get in and start the laser treatment, i feel as though with it faded they will have little grounds to refuse my appeal, especially if I have already started the removal rather than tell them I will do it in the future, my letter says nothing about my PCA it just states that I have failed the vetting process, I will send my appeal letter on Monday, if I do not hear from them should I just go do my PCA? I feel as though I should, they haven't told me not to.

Probably best contacting OHW regarding the PCA and see what they say, you don't want to turn up on the day and be turned away.

Yes still go to PCA. I had to appeal vetting and rang them as my medical was the week after I got the letter and they told me to still go as I was appealing. Good luck.

Thank you so much for the support, this is all I want, it will give me and my little girl the life I want to give her and I'll be damned if a stupid stupid tiny little tattoo is going to stand in my way. Will get everything in place tomorrow as I'm only home from a holiday and head isnt in the right place, whats to be will be, I know it will all work out one way or another!

I honestly would hold fire on the lasering. What if you get it lasered and they still reject it?

Why not ask for a meeting? Vetting fails used to be able to meet as far as i remember possibly a chief supt of assistant chief constable?

Could show how small it is, explain how much you want this and that you're willing to cover it/laser it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 475 ✭✭blueboat

Good luck. I hope your successful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭goodburger1

Yeah def appeal it. I failed my medical and appealed. Took a while and I had to have an interview with the chief medical officer and he had to assess me. I start next month. I wasn't going to appeal as I thought it's not worth it. Boy was I wrong.

Do you really feel like I should wait and appeal it first? I feel like if I start it will show how serious I am, to be honest I hate the tattoo anyway, so I don't care to get it removed. As I said I know I can cover it with makeup and I seriously do feel if I am put infront of someone they will see the passion I have for this-like us all it means everything to me.

I am definately appealing it, because I know I am more than a tattoo. My letter states that to appeal I have to write to the independent assessor, do I just write and state that I want to appeal their decision? And then wait for them to contact me regarding what information etc they need? Obviously I don't want to go all guns blazing, it just sats if I want the decision reviewed I have to write within 14 days

No your letter needs to be your appeal. You need to put everything in it and send it recorded delivery. It took around 3 months for me to get my decision back from them.

Ok my letter is very vague so may just ring on Monday and ask them what I need to do and include.

That was my thought process. Show that your so committed you're already in the process of getting it removed/addressing the issue that's stopping you progressing. Especially if your not fussed on it in the first place. Bear in mind I've never been though the appeals process. Best of luck mate.
