If Johnboy1951 is around he might explain how to connect a Raspberry Pi or the likes to it. Any device that has a web browser such as a smart phone, PC, laptop or tablet can access an enigma box on your network. You simply enter the boxes network address into the browser.
BTW Wifi seldom gives good results streaming HD

If I can't do it over the wifi network I don't think I would bother. It is for very limited use and most of the tv in the bedroom would be watched live.

If you can't bring an ethernet cable directly to the box, then a homeplug will often give better results for HD channels than wifi.

    Cheers for replies.

Is anyone thinking of having a freesat box in conjunction with the new Connect box?

Is there any disadvantage other than having to switch the hdmi inputs? I presume this could be done on a one for all remote.

I know it would be a pain flicking between both (maybe 10sec delay).

No one in their right mind would buy a Saorview connect box for €220 and it wont even record

A 10 sec delay could become frustrating very quickly I'd imagine. You won't have a combined EPG either, so if you're watching BBC1 but want to "quickly" check what's on RTE1, then that's a 20 sec process.

    No recording (yet) with Connect.

To make a 'non-smart' TV 'smart' is a matter of putting a device before its input that will do the 'smart' stuff for it.
In fact most such devices are not limited like some TVs are and so give a better experience.

The output of the device is a HDMI out to the TV.

The smart device can 'tune in' across the LAN (wifi if signal is good enough and very stable) and deliver its output to the TV.

Other than that a lot depends on what this smart device is getting the signal from.

    Anyway that is the principle.
I use R-Pis and NUC as the devices.
Can also use tablets, phones and PCs etc to grab signals from my backend system (not the same as yours).

I know. I normally use the tv listings app to see what is on satellite as the epg only has now/next.
The real problem is when you want to recall quickly between a sat and a saorview channel, e.g. watching 2 different matches to check scores.

You seem determined to find the most expensive, most awkward solution you can :)

Get a mid-range combo box and you wont look back or give Sky lots of money to watch the free channels.

    :)
Or he could get a Digibit 4 tuner Sat box, a R-Pi and a couple of €10 DVB-T dongles and have them all available on the LAN, for very little more than that connect box ..... with 7 day EPG for all channels!
    :)

    I don't think so !
I have only heard the positives of the linux boxes thus far and with other people in the house wanting a simple system that is reliable I am looking at all options that won't cause headaches for others.

OK so you are happy to pay twice the price for half the functionality on a box that is clearly not fit for market yet. Good luck with that.

When my Sky+ box went belly up I bought this last November direct from the factory in the UK. Zgemma H2S. It was 79 pounds then, and it now only 65 pounds. My Sky+ box had only FTA and SD channnels at that, so I was throwing money away. This box gave my HD FTA, I just connected a hard drive to the USB input and it then it was pausing live TV and recording series link.

As for setting it up, you said you have some tech ability, and as others have said, its not too difficult to get these up and running and there are forums which will help you. Also it doesn't crash like my Sky+ box used to do, its very robust.

Ah the inevitable Zgemma suggestion. The manufacturer may have a UK website. They are however made my Air Digital Technology in Shenzhen. They used to make clones of real products. Dont know what design the Zgemma's are based upon!

I'd read up them and check the plug that came with it has a working earth!

To the OP, if you are looking for a cheap reliable box not likely to make your house go on fire, go with the established manufacturers. Have a look at the edision minis for example.

Theres a thread in the foreign satellite forum about e2 boxes.

If one was to go with the Vu Duo2 does it provide the rte/tv3/tg4 players and some form of rollback epg.

I have heard lots of positives on these but I'd like to hear what the cons are from people using them.

That site linked previously is very handy as you can set up the box as you please.

It does mention dual tuners just like the Saorview Connect.
If you got both the dual dvb-s2 and dvb-t2 does that mean you have 2 tuners for each?

It seems the hybrid(iptv?) is the same tuner as the dvb-t2 so does that mean one can't be used if the other is?

You sound very down on the Zgemma. I have one for the 11 months and as I said it has not given me any problems... numerous people use them successfully as a FTA Sat box, with pause, record and series link facility instead of paying a packet to Sky for the FTA, pause and recording functions. This thread was for suggestions for FTA Sat box with EPA alternatives.

I like boxes, hence the name. I'm not a tech snob. I go through many boxes, just for my own amusement, and then sell them on or give them away to friends, when I want to try something else. NAND Flash CPU speed and general build quality are things I look at in even economy price boxes. There are good value bargains to be had in each sector of boxes.

The OP is looking for a box that does both Saorview and Satellite in one. The Zgemma you linked to is a twin tuner satellite only tuner.

IMO its touch and go which are worse Zgemma or Sh4 boxes like Amiko.
