The fact that the vast majority of "refugees" from the middle east and Africa that have come to Europe are 18-35 year old males.

And the vast majority of Irish people that emigrated to the states in times of desperation were 18-35 year old males.

What is your definition of vast?

The dictionary defines it as of very great extent or quantity, vast.

Do you know the difference in numbers of male and female Irish emigrants during the recession?

Especially male victims. The elephant in the room

Yeah but it wasn't costing the US 275 k per Irish person that went there, also I don't think any of them were jumping on the back of trucks or were responsible for a drivers death by blocking the road resulting in him crashing.

Not really. What I remember from the "American wakes" of my youth was young lads (the majority) going off to America and Britain, and to a smaller extent young girls. Whole families emigrating: less so.

They weren't refugees leaving when you were younger.

    The squeezed middle.

    Exactly.

Pay for everything and pay for everyone else as well.

Varadkar mentions tax cuts for working people and that little midget Brendan Howlin and SF say it shouldn't happen, the "vulnerable" need services paid for.

The number of alt-right re-regs and sock puppet accounts on boards.

So you want the media to report on a suspected re reg on a discussion forum?

funny how the people coming from the middle east switch between refugees and economic migrants when it suits

The state of the roads in this country, primary and most secondary roads are ok but the rest of the road network that nearly everyone needs to use at some point are a disgrace in some places.

Potholes and dangerous turns in rural areas are causing accidents and very little is being done to fix these roads.

And the media never attempted to hide that fact, unlike now.

I'm not sure I understand your point. The original point specifically said refugees, admittedly in quotes, which is what I was referring to. I also don't recall ever denying the fact that the Syrians/Lybians are indeed refugees.

Using an unemployed person in Dublin in 1985 is not comparing apples with apples, either to a Syrian in 2017 or an Irish person in 1850.

3 things that are on the rise in Ireland the media wont touch are

Female paedophiles and female paedophilia(some who have worked in childcare/religious institutions)

Dog fighting. Goes on lot more than people think and real big money on it.Dogs are rarely fought to the death but the injuries are treated crudely by someone with no vetinary skills usually in a shed. Think gluegun instead of stitches. Dogs that go missing sometimes end up being blood or bait dogs which is beyond horrific.

Sperm counts are dropping significantly due to our environment.

Media only reports what they want and even then have no obligation to tell us the truth.

what is the major difference? they were all trying to leave a situation that had no future and go somewhere they might have a chance of a decent life.

    Agree Traveller and Gambling.

Especially Gambling. You can only drink so much per day but you can throw the keys of your House on 1 card/bet.

I would make it 21 the legal age for Gambling.

Very good one. I feel for kids these days in so many ways. They have to be cool, into the right things and Girls have be pretty etc.

I know its been like that way back to small degree but with Social Media its taken on a far greater level.

    Political correctness.

On the radio earlier for example: "women are naturally better suited to minding children", which they are, that is an undisputed scientific fact, however, both presenters felt compelled to add the line "but that's not to say that men cannot also look after the children, or that women cannot be competitive in the workplace."
This needing to add a caveat is new in the last few years and is prevalent in every single media source. Honest debate where genuine opinions are offered no longer need apply.

We've arrived at the point where a point can't be made without having to offer a caveat, lest you be mauled by the red-headed feminazi brigade.

Loneliness. It feeds into so many other issues that society faces from obvious depression to less obvious ones, like extra pressure on the housing market.

Similar to this - the state of men's shopping in Ireland.

You walk into the likes of New Look/Penneys/anywhere else and men have a corner worth of clothes -- and that's it.

I think we have to take a look at ourselves as well. Do you really want to tune into the news each day to hear that a young family in Carlow have just landed their dream jobs and have cleared their mortgage before they're 40, or that the quality of life in Toronto is tremendous and just look at all of these lucky Canadians enjoying their spare time. Maybe top it all off with a package about new trade agreements that have improved the lives or every single fisherman, ever.

Maybe you would. Or maybe you'd think it was just sticking your head in the sand. I remember the Ray Darcy show used to have a 'good news day' where the Today FM newsreader would announce positive news stories from all over the country. The day it started I thought it was a great idea. The next day I turned it off.

Yeah because good news is downright depressing. News should be confined to deaths/murders, war, famine, genocide and the weather. :rolls eyes:
