Debating re-joining sky - original package or buying a combo box? Any pro/cons of either. have small kids!

Simple. A combo box is a once off purchase and free thereafter. A lot of Sky basic package is free to watch anyway, so why pay them.
As for kids using it... I got a programmable remote for an elderly relative and only used the basic numbers, channel up/down and volume buttons to avoid accidentally finding or upsetting menus.

Yeah, unfortunately broadband in our area is crap, we have mobile wifi but are limited to 50gb. With 6 of us in the house it doesn't go too far :(

What channels would the kids be watching?

FTA would still give you Cbeebies, CBBC, CITV, Pop and Tiny Pop, perhaps some others.

If you want Nickelodeon, Boomerang, Cartoon Network, etc. then it's Sky.
