It's part of the rear view mirror unit and can only be swapped out as one complete item including the mirror but it's quick to change, takes 15 minutes tops.

Interesting that it said your rain sensor is faulty as the high beam assist/ auto light sensor is in there too which are very prone to giving trouble.

Never seen this bringing a fault light on the dashboard though.

Figured this the best place to ask. Anyone know how straightforward and kind of cost involved in retrofitting a rear camera to a mib2 unit. See a Polish website sells kit for 250 and then coding needed after that. Cheers

I don't think it's a huge job. More fiddly. You'll have to route a cable from the rear hatch all the way to the back of the glovebox... so that will involve a bit of fiddly trim removal and routing.
Does the rear badge pop out on that bus like on the Golf? So you'll need a new rear badge in that case with the camera on it.
Then coding etc which is straightforward, you just need someone handy with VCDS.

Yeah that's what I was thinking Joe. No, the vomit comet doesn't have a swanky pop out rear badge like you high rollers in the vee dubs, just goes in beside the rear plate lights. Might be a project I'll take on, need to read up a bit more on it.

I'm assuming it's not possible to ask the dealer to order a part and get it fit after a car arrives?

I really really regret not getting the running indicators...I figured lights are a simple plug in job and requires a quick VCDS coding. I'm guessing they wouldn't do it though?

They'd surely do it, but it may work out more expensive than specing it at the factory.

Is the car built yet? Is it too late to change your order?

I think it requires some small work with the wiring loom too. You could easily DIY it. The likes of Kufatec.de probably sell the lights with a pre-made loom ready to plug and play.
It will not be cheap though.

Carsystems.pl should have something too. I've bought stuff from them before.

As for the fitting of the rear camera, I've fitted the rear towbar electrics to my parent's Golf and coded it up using VCDS. It wasn't difficult when I had the instructions to follow. The routing as Joe suggested requires some small trim panel removal and a bit of fishing the cables through. The rear camera isn't going to be anymore difficult than that. I'd say 2hrs tops is all it should take to fit it. The coding side for the camera I'm not sure about as it's something I haven't done.

Update from the dealer and it's a no, they won't fit them. I've been kicking myself for not ordering the lights since about two weeks after ordering. I guess I'll wait 3 years for my next car, by then everyone will have running indicators :(

Well as I said you could get the parts yourself and any loom required. Pretty simple job tbh but will hit the pocket quite heavily. I'd say €6-700 easy.

As nice as they are it's a lot of money for something you can't see from the drivers seat. I'd certainly spec front LED's / xenons ahead of them any day of the week as those are actually useful.

How much were they as an option when buying, out of curiosity?

Well they'd still be VW OEM, but you'd pay a fair bit more than €450. Here's the pre-facelift LED's on Kufatec for 700 quid:

    https://www.kufatec.de/shop/de/volkswagen/golf/golf-7-5q/komplettset-led-heckleuchten-vw-golf-7-standard-abgedunkelt-r-golf

From a quick browse, I don't see the facelift versions there yet. There's also some how-to youtube videos if you google it...

That's the reason I decided not to go with them, I can't see them and they aren't useful to me. Happy enough with the park assist and keyless and when it came to the rear lights I preferred keeping the cost down.

If I don't end up in a GTI or an R for the next one I'll definitely spec them and the front LEDs :)

The CLI? The DTCs? Assuming you're in the right place you'll have to translate that for us...

Yeah I thought it was unusual that the Check Engine Light (CLI) should come on because of a non engine related issue, but I've run the VCDS on it a number of times and it only brings up the same Diagnostic Trouble Code.... and it only relates to faulty rain sensor, nothing engine related.

Honestly, I didn't find having to manually turn on the wipers overly taxing on my old car, is there any way of disabling this I wonder.

The check Engine light can come on for the most obscure and mundane of things. A buddy with an Audi A4 recently paid an Indy to do a VCDS scan on his car... the engine light was on so he was expecting big bucks. Turned out the fuel filler cap wasn't screwed on correctly...

It seems like they are now using it as a catch all, to make you throw the diagnostic on the car for anything at all, as opposed to something wrong with the core engine components. The MK4 seemed to be different. The check engine light did not seem to light up for non-engine related issues. I could be wrong but that's my experience.

Anyone interested in a Polo GTI sized car could buy my Cupra! :o

@PeterTheNinth - just check that you're running the latest version of VCDS as older versions associate wrong descriptions to faults.

    Other half has one :pac:

In slightly related news, I was onto VW, they say that the Polo GTI will only be available with DSG here.

    Howdy,

I'm due to get my new GTI shortly! :)

Just wondering are there any tips you'd give to a first time GTI owner. I'm moving up from a highline Golf and in my head have the GTI on a pedestal and want to make sure I look after it as best I can.

I'm thinking along the lines of cleaning it etc., I'd only get my current Golf washed every couple of months really. Do I need to do anything special with the lovely red brake calipers or anything? Any engine maintenance I should keep a keener eye on? Again, currently I do nothing but top up the washer fluid and oil really outside of getting it serviced.

    I'm clueless haha, thanks!

I'm picking mine up on Tuesday.
Bought a job lot of products from DoDo Juice directly and then a few more bits and pieces from Detailing Shed.

There's loads of good info here: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=78.0

Have a look on YouTube too, there's loads of good detailing videos.

I'm also a total novice, coming from a fairly clapped out Passat that I've long stopped caring about.

a few little cleaning tips / hints...

The chrome tailpipes get caked in baked on soot very quickly. Keep on top of them by giving them a scrub with metal polish, once a month would do fine. If you don't keep on top of it, it's a pig of a job to get them clean after. I think you can always tell a well minded / enthusiast owned GTI/R from a not-so-loved one by glancing at the tailpipes. If they're shiny, it's a very good sign that the car has been looked after!

Get a set of "wheel woolies" on DetailingShed - very handy for cleaning between the spokes on the alloys. Always looks really lazy to me if the face of the wheels are cleaned and you can see caked dirt behind the spokes. Like the tailpipes, keep on top of it and it's not such a chore.

The red callipers will also get scruffy looking pretty quickly if you don't take care of them. I'd suggest applying a sealant to those too (as well as the wheels) and you'll find that they'll wash easier too - brake dust etc will blast off easily with a power wash.

Get a bottle of Iron-X, as the rear end of the car in particular picks up a lot of iron fallout. Most noticeable on lighter colours. And tar remover for similar reasons.

And in the slightly longer term...
The rear wheel hubs will rust - sometimes in a matter of weeks. And it looks sh1t! If you're fussy, you will have to paint them yourself with silver hammerite.

    2 quick questions folks,
    1) What recommendation might you have for new tyres
    2) Would ye ever fit slightly wider tyres on the back (for aesthetic reasons)

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Yeah PS4's seem to be the "go-to" tyre at the moment - or even better, PS4-Sport, although I don't think the Sport version is available on 18's yet.
Very expensive in 19's actually - I have to bite the bullet myself in the next few weeks.

As for different tyre widths - no, I don't think thats advisable or if it's even possible? The alloys are a specific width. If you change the width you're likely to need to change the profile too and that doesn't sound like a bright idea to me. Then will they even fit on the alloy properly. What most people do is fit spacers. 12-15mm on the rear makes a nice difference from what I've seen.

PS4 S is really designed for a car you're going to be tracking semi-regularly, they're the last stop before the Cup Sport.

Yeah, but on 19's, it looks like it's now either PS3 or PS4-S. A lot of guys on the R / GTI forums are fitting PS4-S' with rave results.

The 19's are always a nice bit more expensive (in any brand) I guess.

Ah, you meant 200 each! Was wondering...!

no, you're looking at around 200 euro per tyre for them in 19's anyway. 18's should be a nice bit cheaper - 160-170 maybe?

EDIT: PS4's in 18's are just £126. But as I said earlier I don't think there's an "S" version in the 18's yet. Add another 10-15 quid per corner if/when they do them.
