Doesn't appear to be much coming through in the way of looseheads or 10s coming through the academies anyone care to comment ?

Probably a fair comment regarding loosehead prop.. be interesting to see what happens there at u20 this year..

At 10 there is very good talent in leinster with Conor Dean, Harry Byrne & David Hawkshaw.

Michael Lowry is a decent prospect at 10 at Ulster, on the small side though.

I don't think he is so tiny that it means he can't become a pro. Plus he could still grow a bit. Ive watched him a bit andhe is very talented though so we will see how he transfers that through the age grades and with the Ulster A side.

Banbridge have Lowry down as 176cm which is 5'9". I'm not sure about that. But it also says he is 76kg, so he needs to stick on another 10 kilos.

That seems too small for the pro game. This will be a telling year for him. can't see him making the 20s tbh

Ulster has him now as 79 kg so he only needs to add 7 or 8 kgs and he'll be around 13.5 to 14 stone. U.R. has him as 170cms or 5'7". Barry John was 5' 7". Shane Williams wasn't a giant. BOD was 5'10" and dripping wet when he began his pro career. I wouldn't write a young guy off at 19 because he has another 2 years or so of growth possibly. He will certainly gain muscle mass. Still, I wouldn't give credence to anything produced by UR without corroborating backup.

Im definitely not writing him off. He is a super talent. Size is the only thing that worries me about him making it for Ulster.

If we don't get 3 or 4regulars out of the current Academy in a few years time then something is wrong with the system. Some years we don't have the talent, this year we do.

Curtis is 6' and 14 stone. Size won't be a problem If he has his dad's pace etc plus his outhalf skills he'll be grand.

The players you list all played in a different era of rugby.

Also huge difference between being 5'7 and 5'10.

A 5'7 outhalf could definitely struggle defensively, wait and see how he progresses... Angus Curtis is the better prospect at the moment for me.

In terms of outhalves it will be interesting to see what happens with the 3 prospects at Leinster:

    Conor Dean(u20)
    Harry Byrne(u19)
    David Hawkshaw(u19)

Hawkshaw still in school, while the other two are in the sub academy.
Dean has Ireland u20 and AIL experience as a u19 from last season.
Byrne was with Leinster u20 this summer and will likely be involved with Ireland u20, although to what degree it's hard to know yet. Will be interesting as well to see how quickly he starts playing AIL for OB.

  • Site Banned Posts: 262 ✭✭letf

Leinster clearly have the most talent at u20 level, followed by Ulster then Munster.

However at u19 level it's pretty close at the moment between Leinster & Munster... might even lean toward Munster at the moment.

I was somewhat surprised by that too, but that's the list I got.

Maybe he hasn't joined up with them yet due to his injury.

Conor Gleeson, Gonzaga captain last year not there either, would have thought he'd be involved in some shape or form.

Yeak I know a few of them are still in school, but they were on this extended academy list I got my hands on.

Fahy is a scrumhalf who was with Blackrock last season currently with Galwegians.
