Which just goes to show how lucky the van driver was and obviously he didn't have a passenger!

At what point would people be comfortable with dash cams being forwarded and used by the Gardaí? Say you put something up on YouTube, and it was used by Gardaí to prosecute the Doyles veg van...
Or someone parking illegally in a bike lane.. Or blocking the bus stop...
( I have no idea whether the gardai could even use this type of evidence to ticket some one, just curious where people stand)

Some EU countries allow to do that and police have email address to send videos and photos. These are mostly related to the obvious things like parking on yellow line, dangerous driving or overtaking etc. These are analysed by police and people do get fined, points etc.
So if it is done in other EU countries I see no reason why it cannot be done in here.

i think he was asking if people had considered that their videos might be used unilaterally by the Gards making posters into informers, albeit unknowing.

If you've published it on youtube first, then it's public information.

I don't think his point was about the legality of it, more the morality.

The morality of upholding the law and assisting in this or protecting the guilty?
I probably wouldn't do anything for a trivial offence but if someone is doing something that is in "real" danger of causing death or injury, I would.

you aren't getting it... it's not about you doing anything, it's about the Gards using a video posted as evidence and I assume suggesting that people shouldn't post incriminating videos as it isn't done to be a grass.

Surely if the Gardaí were using a video you uploaded, they'd need to have the original raw files from the SD card as well as carry out an inspection of the dash cam itself, and not just rely on a video posted on YouTube!

They'd need to rule out editing/tampering, otherwise it wouldn't stand up in court.

Exactly. Video evidence needs to be 'proved' in court before it is admissible. Original recorded file and the oral evidence of the person that recorded it. The Guards can't just pluck Youtube videos from the Internet and prosecute people.

If the Guards would prosecute based on video evidence I would go out and buy a cam for each windown in my car

There was a piece in the Sunday Times about this. It says "currently dashcam footage can only be used when the owner consents to it being used and is willing to attend court".

I don't use the M50 much at peak times, but the new filtering lanes have only appeared to make things worse.

Better to be a 'grass' than a person who thinks in terms of 'grassing'.

Good example that people with dash cams are sometimes just out there to "catch" people for a good clip.
Add in a BMW driver and you get this:

A bit long but a good example that there arent enough chill pills sold.

Cause people have no clue how to use them, traffic joining m50 cannot merge, cause you have people driving in them lanes. Most of the time they see car trying to merge they tend to speed up.

I would argue that the DashCam driver was partly responsible for this accident, he deliberately kept out over the white line to frustrate the BMW drivers earlier attempts to overtake, was driving at an unacceptably slow speed for much of his journey, then antagonised the BMW when he finally did get around him and verbally abused him. As a direct result of this I am sure the BMW driver was fuming and which caused him to drive at excessive speed and crash.

The dashcam driver though he owned the road and got jealous of the BMW and tried to frustrate him successfully, resulting in dangerous driving and an accident. His behaviour at the scene of the accident after was disgraceful. But as it was a BMW I guess good enough for him right?? Despite that BMW being around 15 years old and the Dashcam driving a newer more valuable car people will side with the dashcam man.
