    Right - stupid question :
When you start up the machine are you going to the home page or the News page?

Home is on the left, news on the right in this image

On the home page, there will be an image for Splatoon 2 if the cart is inserted.

Second stupid question : Has he put the cartridge into the system?

Assuming he's looking in the right place and the cart is inserted, maybe perform a system update if you haven't already?

Third stupid question : you sure it's a physical game? I thought the splatoon bundle was a game code...

Third and a half stupid question : there's no chance that you bought the Splatoon bundle with the game code in the box AND the shop sold you a physical copy too, and you're not sticking the cart in the Switch because the console already has the game installed but is waiting for you to insert the code... is there?

As banjo has already said it sounds like you are watching the trailers from the news section, you need to move your cursor up on the left joycon on the D-pad and select the poster type things for the game.

Thanks guys, I'm going to take a look now. We got the console separate to the game ... bought from Amazon.

Thanks for your help guys, we got it sorted. We didn't have a Nintendo account set up so that was the main issue. Happy boy here today. Thanks very much!
