Internet connection monitor

    Hi folks. I'm having fierce trouble with an intermittent connection to my DSL. When I ring eir they run a test and log a fault then the tech comes out, tests the line and it's fine. Basically the connection drops out for a few minutes every few minutes. I am wondering if there's a device or app that will keep a record of when the connection drops and how long it's gone for.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

    Can you log into you eircom router?
    I'd be surprised if there's no section detailing the connection stats in there

    Can you leave a PC on even while you're not there? If so, something like this, which pings 3 known i.p address outside your network from inside, may help:

    To be meaningful and tell you whats going on even while you're not there, it really needs to be on all the time for a period of time.

    If your I.P. address could be static rather than dynamic, you could use the Broadband Quality Monitor (BQM) at https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality

    This monitors your static I.P. over time, pinging it every second and plots the result on a graph for every 100 second period across 24-hours. This graph shows min/max/avg latency on your link, measured from outside your network.
    It will work with dynamic i.p addresses, but when the PPP connectuin drops and a new i.p. address is assigned by your supplier, you would need to tell the BQM of the new address so that it could ping it instead of the old one, which is not really practical if your link is regularly dropping its connection.
