This is great news. There just aren't enough boorish, middle-aged, right-wing men expressing their predictable opinions with an excess of self-assurance on Irish radio.

Looks like Chris is going to become the stations political editor.

While I'm overjoyed at Ivan's return to daily programming part of me feels sorry for the presenters down through the years who have worked diligently for the station only to be dropped or very publicly demoted (Jonathan Healy & Tom Dunne). Jonathan used to drive me insane towards the end with his smart @rse comments but it must be hard to take when a retired Government Minister with a good pension gets one of the top jobs in the station after upping sticks and leaving the station to travel overseas on two different occasions.

I wonder do the lifers in RTÉ realise what a great life they have compared to their opposite number in commercials stations like Newstalk.

Sean Moncrieff just said "Next up is Newstalk Drive with Jonathan 'The Untertaker' Healy"

I couldn't listen to them, but do feel sorry for them.

I couldn't listen to them, but do feel sorry for them.

Their problems were obvious and many. However some were fixable.....they chose not to fix them

Poor old Sarah couldn't handle Jamie Donaldson at all.

    Great news :)

And oh please God just make Chris Donoghue go away. I'm sure he could find a job doing something else. Anything else!

Good that Yates is going up against last word. Matt coopers getting to soft and becoming an easily offended snowflake so we might get some proper no BS from newstalk

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,267 ✭✭✭DubTony

I've had to turn off. Tweedledum and Tweedledee are bad, but Healy's bias on almost every topic makes me feel ill. Throw in the smart ass comments and his imagining of what people mean in text messages and you've the most cynical cranky waste of space on radio.

I thought this over-age snowflake was gone.

I find it odd that they're just giving Yates the Drivetime show on his own.
sure, he's fine on Sunday, but that's 2hrs and relatively light-hearted fluff most of the time. him and Chris would make by far the most sense.

If Chris is being lined-up as possible Political Editor, then it's surely not a demotion for him I'd have thought? probably manage to get a weekend current affairs show too.
who is the current Political Editor now that Shane Coleman is a full-time presenter?

wouldn't be surprised if they put Sarah in the role Collette was in, part-time breakfast presenter with the other 2 (and Quinlan). having no female presenters whatsoever from Mon-Fri won't happen IMO.

basically just putting Sarah into Collette's old job, and putting Yates in to replace her on Drivetime (with Chris), would make by far the most sense to me....

I wonder is Sarah being lined up to replace Vin B on TV3. I'm pretty sure she filled in for him a few times

Was kind of inevitable he'd be back in a weekday slot. Was expecting it'd be lunchtime though, with Hook due to retire. Maybe that's been postponed again...

Sarah McInerney won't be happy, given her stance of gender quotas;)

But seriously, she's terrible to listen to, her monotone drone makes me want to stick needles in my ears.

But we don't know what impact this will have on the other shows. Do they announce the Autumn schedule soon?

I like Ivan, glad he's back, but I thought Chris & Sarah are getting a rough deal. Drive is miles better than The Right Hook.

Can't absolutely wait to hear Ivan winding up the OTB offense-taking machine every evening.

Great news but I am suprised they just haven't put Ivan and Chris back together, which I wouldn't favour but also wouldn't be opposed to.

I doubt Quinlan or Williams will be seen again.

I didn't always listen in the evenings but I didn't mind Sarah too much. She is seriously deficient as a broadcaster though and trips over herself more than anyone I have ever heard on national radio.

If Ivan cannot make a significant dent in Drivetime nothing well.

If they get rid of Williams and Hook and give Moncrieff at least half an hour back then Newstalk will be somewhat listenable again.

To be honest I'm shocked at this one. I would've thought the station management would just stick to their guns and battled through - seems that's the approach they've taken with Breakfast. You would've thought that Breakfast was biggest hit in the reshuffle last year so if they didn't make changes there they certainly wouldn't make them elsewhere.

In fairness, Chris is an excellent broadcaster. I'd be surprised if they let him go but unless they shift him back to breakfast there's nothing else in Newstalk.

The Political Editor title is a bit of a fudge in my opinion - while Coleman is a political journalist by trade he previously had the title and spent more time covering for other presenters rather than reporting specifically on politics.

I agree and disagree. It's a way to keep Donoghue around but wrt Coleman, he was on pretty much throughout the daytime schedule when he was political editor.

    No idea.

Before Chris O'Donoghue left on his holidays last Friday week, his exact words were 'I'll be back... in a while'.

This evening, Jonathan Healy appeared to joke (or genuinely hesitate) about whether he (Healy) will or won't be back tomorrow.

Disappointed, I liked Ivan but don't think I could stick 5 days of him on his own. I liked Chris and Sarah and thought the show sped by. I'd already changed the dial. Used to listen from 8 all the way thru the day but had stopped since the breakfast changes before moncrieff.
Considering news talk is now 100% monotone I'll pass. I liked a bit of variety and different viewpoints however newstalk management doesn't seem to. Can't believe breakfast is being maintained with that tool Williams.

Yeah, first thing to change should have been breakfast. I imagine the evening slot was more appealing to Yates than the breakfast one.

    Yates won't do early mornings
