    Hi folks,

Quick question - are the above sites okay for buying laptops from? As in, delivery times ok, customer service, etc.

    Cheers.

I bought a new laptop from laptopsdirect about 6 weeks ago, saved about 150 on the Irish price and it was delivered within 3-4 days, all sealed in the OEM packaging. I specifically wanted new and not a refurb! Very happy with the service.

I have no opinion on the after sales service yet.

pcspecialist.co.uk is another place to check. I got 3 laptops + upgrades over the years and if you're a linux user you can get a laptop without any system (100 euro of "MS tax" saved)

    Cheers folks.

This looks like a good price for the spec?

    Or am I missing something?

Doesn't say it is a refurb either.

A link or the spec please?

    Ha, of course....apologies.

Here is the laptop I was talking about:

Looking for something with quick start-up, and well able to manage multiple programmes running at once...No gaming.

Very low spec, price seems to be OK. No info about SSD speed. No info about bluetooth standard. Looks like there is only one USB port?

P.S. Now sure how it works on windows, but under linux quick start is no longer important. Hibernation is the new quick-start - I don't restart my laptop unless I do a major system upgrade. SSD for hibernation to disk is perfect.

Ah, very good....thanks for the advice! I'm not hugely up to date with spec and laptops. I thought a 256GB SSD was just enough for the quickness, didn't know there were different speeds!

Bluetooth is irrelevant to me. As I said, the ability to seamlessely flick between different programmes such as Chrome, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and a media player the most important thing for my job.

I think you should be fine, but I take no responsibility for my words ;-)

The screen resolution seems to be the weakest point for me. Even "slow" SSD is way faster than mechanical drives, so you should be quite happy anyway.

Just a warning for anyone thinking of using laptopsdirect.ie - Don't bother. They are a useless bunch of idiots.
8 days after I ordered something, it still hadn't been dispatched.
When I placed the order, my bank sent me a code via text message which I had to enter on their website to complete the order. The money came out of my account immediately. Despite this, they refused to process my order until they spoke to me on a landline to carry out some further security checks!
When I contacted them, they explained that they need a picture of my bank card and ID. I was reluctant to send this as their website looks very amateur & their email system also seems primitive, so I had my doubts about their cyber security. They said I could block out most of the info on the bank card & ID so I agreed to send them the pictures they requested. Soon after that, I received an email to say the order had been processed. 2 working days later and the order still wasn't dispatched despite the fact I paid for 1-2 day delivery. I finally gave up and cancelled the order. Waiting for the money to come back into my account now.

Please avoid them. I can't stress highly enough how incompetent they are. Also, trying to contact them by email is useless. You get an automatic reply to say they'll respond to your query within 8 hours during business hours.
