Iphone 5 not charging?

    When i plug in the charging lead the charging symbol displays but it stays red

    Is it likely the battery?

    Could be a software issue, have you restarted the phone?

    the phone has turned on showing battery at 70%

    but it dies again soon after apparently

    it's a kids phone

    Well if it was me I would do a complete restore on the phone and start again and see. If the issue continues then its the battery acting up and needs to be replaced.
