Funny how he got his name, both of his parents surnames of Vennegoor and Hesselink both had a lot of respect in their area, so they decided to give him both, basically a double-barrel surname here. In Dutch, it means Vennegoor or Hesselink, but in English he sounds like a medieval knight. :D

    Close but not entirely true.

His ancestors owned 2 farms. Farmers' last names in the area they lived, were usually related to the name of the farm.
As they had 2, the name Vennegoor of Hesselink was "born" where "of" indeed translated to "or"

Mbappe just went down with an awful looking knee injury. Could ruin his big money transfer to Madrid. He's standing up at least now.

EDIT: he seems fine now. Disregard my sensationalism.

Double EDIT: and now he's gone down again and been subbed off. Think I jinxed him.

I think the only people talking about death blows and mourning phases and anger phases are certain Man Utd fans who are probably likening this to when they lost Ronaldo and have since seen their domination of English football fall away significantly. I can safely say this won't be the case at Barcelona post Neymar.

I'd blame the demise more on Fergie than Ronaldo.
I cant see how anyone would think losing the third best player being similar to losing a top two player of the last ten years
More similar to maybe Tevez leaving

Lallana now out for a few months with injury. Liverpool would best line up some replacements in midfield soon if, as is very likely, Coutinho f*cks off.
Hoffenheim will not be easy opponents.

If Coutinho goes (I don't think he does this summer) and with Lallana and Sturridge injured they're screwed for the start of the season and the first few CL games. Especially as no club seems willing to take their money.

First 2............... If they don't sort their sh*t out, they won't have a few

Ah they should still have enough to beat Hoffenheim.

Surely the purse strings will have to be loosened now though.

Barca line up Inigo Martinez, Philipe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele as their big 3 summer targets. All eager to move to Barca, some reportedly closer than others to being done deals. If Barca get all 3 it's been a great summer.

Those 3 in and Neymar out is a bad summer.

Add in Semedo, Marlon and Delofeu and it's been a cracking summer.

How do you know they are all desperate to move to Barca? Is that your opinion or can you demonstrate it as fact?

Good number of outlets close to Barcelona or reputable reporting deals close for all 3 players. All 3 want to play for Barca, only current clubs stand in the way.

"close to Barcelona" is one way to put it. "Propaganda" may be more appropriate though.

Are these the same outlets that told you that Neymar told Marcelo, Ramos and Casaimero that he was off to PSG before telling his own colleagues!!

    Doing the rounds this morning;

£30m Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko is in talks over a loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,875 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

A year ago £30 million was a lot of money to pay for a player and it was a really bad signing if it didn't work out. This year it just doesn't seem that important at all. Sissoko imo has never been that good and it was no surprise to me that it didn't work out at Tottenham.

Pogba cost less than half the price of Neymar, sounds like United got a good deal.

Has a nice ring to it, looking forward to that actually being his title some day because Barcelona cules do actually elect their own board. It's a people's club and the people love Pique.

    Tranquilo ;)

In the 4 seasons after Ronaldo left, Utd won 2 more titles and the other 2 seasons lost out on goal difference and by one point. They also made it to a Champions League final.

Would you not agree that is was actually the lose of the greatest football manager of this generation when Fergie retired that caused Utd to fall away significantly?

Sure I'm not discounting Ferguson leaving as not being a major factor. Though Ronaldo's exit was pretty much the end for the last great team Ferguson built. Fairly obvious that the standard they were at in the 3 years before Ronaldo left to where they were after he left gradually declined and they've not gotten close to that standard since. It's not a surprise, he was one of the best players in the world and they weren't able to replace him.

    No it wasn't.

    Evra
    Vidic
    Ferdinand
    Scholes
    Neville
    Rooney gone to sh*ye
    Giggs' ageing
    etc etc

It also coincided with City''s emergence as well as the PL standards generally improving for every team.

Ronaldo was poor relatively speaking for his standards in that final season (at times)

You are better than that AIG

Obertan, Mame Biram Diouf, Owen and Valencia were the replacements. The decline in standard was the moment Ronaldo signed for Madrid.

I think it may be more balanced overall but the quality at the top level has gotten worse and this is reflected in CL performance of English teams
