upgrading after 10 years

Owing to Vista's security issues I need to replace my Dell Dimension E520.

Really haven't a clue what is available so thought I'd pick the brains on here.

My present set up is pretty much as it came in the box apart from doubling the RAM to 4 GB and installing a new video card to add an extra monitor.

Basically I want a PC for online browsing, streaming/downloading and basic spreadsheet work. I have a disk for MS Works 4 which I am hoping will work on my new machine as I am Excel phobic.

I would like to see a big improvement in speed and storage but my budget is only e500.

I'd grab a desktop like this from Adverts, throw an SSD like this Crucial MX300 in it, and you're pretty much good to go.

If you want a new machine, that can be done too, though you won't get quite the same value, it would leave you with a better upgrade path down the line. I did a build up, but can't post it because of a broken script, but it was a pretty much equivalent AMD machine for about €560 shipped, excluding Windows.

I'd probably go for the next one up if you can, and get the one with a 256GB SSD.

You can also throw in another 4GB RAM pretty cheaply (about €30), which I'd recommend. Windows on 4GB these days isn't great when you start opening lots of Chrome tabs.

Yeah, had to dump chrome for firefox. My old Dell would just freeze.

Like the look of that one. Will decide tomorrow.
