Oh, how I would love it if today's show started with

"Chris is in the mansion house waiting on the result of the Fine Gael leadership vote. We'll go straight to him when there's a result, because there is really no reason to speak about this two horse race until then."

The Newstalk coverage of this non-event is beyond embarrassing. Is Chris Donoghue the only person in the country who gives a rat's arse about the result?

No. Coleman was creaming himself over it at 7.00 am this morning.

    Jesus, he's excited.

I can imagine this is how he got in school when his class got extra homework.

I hope Coveney wins as it will really upset the pinko/liberal/pc brigade in Newstalk.

Even though Coveney has positioned himself clearly (slightly) to the left of the Thatcherite Leo?

I don't think you really understand much about Leo Vadakar if you think he's part of the "pinko liberal pc brigade".

Sarah's interview RE cyber bullying was bloody embarrassing again, do some research you bumbling buffoon. How did this clown get on radio.

She's making things up and getting caught out, amateur hour

Varadker a pinko/liberal?! More like slightly right of Attila the Hun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 256 ✭✭wintear

Varadker maybe to the right of Margaret Thatcher but being a homosexual son of an immigrant father he ticks most of the liberal boxes.
They in newstalk are focusing more on what he is rather than the more important need to focus on his policies and their potential impact.

I think I understand plenty about the Newstalk agenda and Leo. This post covers it more than adequately http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=103699115&postcount=441 and I never said that Leo was part of the "pinko liberal pc brigade" - try reading what I wrote.

I would have thought they were more excited that he's so right wing than the fact that he's gay.

Are we listening to the same station?

Let's take a look at the week day line-up.

    Shane Coleman
    Paul Williams
    Pat Kenny
    G Hook
    Sean Moncrieff
    Chris Donoghue
    Sarah McInerney

I have no idea what PW stands for but the only other person on that list who you could label right wing is George Hook.

Pat falls somewhere in the centre on most issues.

The rest of the day is a populist love in with contributors to match.

It's representative of the Irish media as a whole and I really doubt it's an agenda being furthered by Denis O'Brien!

They're all bog-standard "Irish liberal" centrist, bar Moncrieff, who's a little bit more left-liberal and Hook, who, on the days when he's consistent, is on the right.

There's no radical socialism, or even just socialist, in there at all.

You went searching for four years old twits to find something to discredit her. At this stage I think a lot of criticism of her is just because she is a woman. I'm against finding token women but as member of half of population I do want to hear some female voices. I always thought Chris and Ivan was brilliant combination but Ivan could be just as bad and uninformed about the subject he was discussing as Sarah was in interview above and there wasn't three pages of whining and complaining.

I agree it's a bit unfair to drag up ancient tweets. The thing with Ivan was/is that he plays up to the clueless oaf stereotype so is a great foil for his copresenter to play the straight man (or woman!).
Sarah isn't criticised for being a woman, she's criticised for being bland, boring, argumentative with every guest, and utterly unprepared on most topics. Chris gets plenty of stick for being a drip too. Hook's entire presenting career is built around how much people hate him.
I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find female presenters more deserving of Sarah's prime slot. I always liked Sile Seoige when she had the weekend show. Dr Ciara Kelly would be a very knowledgeable radio host. They could easily snap someone up from RTE, they pay plenty for PK I bet.
I agree with you that a few women would be welcome in newstalk, but it shouldn't be an excuse for Sarah to be beyond criticism.

I actually prefer Sarah to both mentioned above. Ciara Kelly is ok but I doubt she is prepared to do 3 hours five days a week. It's a lot easier to prepare for one show per week than five.

Why dont they ask James Comey is there any election in the last 50 years that America and the FBI/CIA not tried to influence?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,846 ✭✭✭NufcNavan

Had a listen there for the first time in a while.

    Still as awful as ever.

Chris getting in Kevin Kilbane for a chat on sport is pointless. There's a whole 2 hour show dedicated to sport that follows yours. It just reeks of Chris trying to be a bit of a 'lad' by passing off his half arsed armchair knowledge of sports.

And then a clip of Liam Gallagher was played from the recent Manchester concert. Sarah then said "I'm a big Oasis fan and there's Liam Gallagher with Live Forever", which looks ok written down but she pronounced "live" as in 'alive'. What a complete tool.

Obfuscation. Transparent obfuscation. It would be hilarious if you didn't think you knew it all.

A question I've been wondering for a while.

Does Chris Donoghue have some kind of status on this show as the lead political host?

He is the only one who seems to travel to Washington for major political events, he does all the major political interviews (e.g. Leo Varadkar last week), and will probably be the one leading on today's General Election interviews.

Sarah tends to be relegated to fluff pieces on kooky scientific findings, or discussions about gender and the workplace, ironically.

Bit of a demotion for someone who used to cover for Vincent Browne on the TV. It's not that I rate her as an incisive political journalist, it's just that Donoghue is no better but seems to get all the plum pieces.

Used to listen to Newstalk drive everyday while it was Chris and Ivan. It worked because they were both bouncing off each other but now it's painful to listen to. Sarah and Chris are both far too PC to give the show the edge it needs imo. Ivan was great at times and at times he came across like a Neanderthal(often very deliberately)but he was a good foil for squeaky clean Chris. The show seemed more natural and entertaining, while still covering current affairs in a reasonably credible way.

Back to podcasts for my drives home nowadays.
