The minister added that his department is currently developing a new strategy

I'm sure that will really speed things up.

Notice they have cleared the platforms at Streamstown station
Anyone know is there a plan for something there?

I've been out on the Greenway the Athlone side a few times over the past few weeks. It's great to see it so busy with cyclists, joggers and walkers.

Is it 12km on the greenway, from Athlone to Moate? Or a little further?

just wondering if anybody here knows if theres any service that exists in Athlone or Mullingar that can give you a lift with your bikes back to the start of the greenway?

No one way tickets I'm afraid. You're committed to a return journey on this line.

    This too shall pass.

Yes there is. Look at the lower extremes of your body. There is is, called feet.

Sounds like a man with a minibus type of job, just kit out a minibus with bike racks and have a scheduled service of pickup points along the route to return cyclists to their origin.

Go from Athlone-Moate return for a 30km cycle or Mullingar-Moate return for a 60km cycle. Useful to distance/endurance before taking on the full route return

    yep - taxis.

even the great western greenway which supports numerous businesses doesn't have such a service in place other than taxis. the bike hire place will only do drop-offs / collections for people hiring from them. in athlone / mullingar i don't think you can even do that because the numbers just aren't there.

    Folks,
Just checking on parking at the Mullingar end of the Greenway. I know of the public car park near the train station in the town, but I'm wondering if there is a secure car park nearer the entrance to the cycleway?

Googlemaps shows the Business park where Outdoor Adventures is. Would this be a suitable alternative? Cheers.

    yes
    its quite safe
you could also park up the town in blackhall for free on sundays or
its only 5 mins from the start of the greenway

there is also a new exit on the greenway being put at Ballinea
you could also park out the road at Kilpatrick/Ballinea and get onto the greenway from the canal towpath

I know it's technically outside of Westmeath but is the Royal Canal greenway extension complete from Abbeyshrule up to west of Ballymahon? I remember funding for this was granted along with the extension of the Rail Trail to the white gates.

    This too shall pass.

Sorry I'm not answering your question but you just reminded me of a recent newspaper article where it was said that the extension of the cycleway from the White Gates will be delayed because Dunnes in Montree are holding it up. Irish Rail gave one or two dates where they would close the train line to allow works to take place for the cycleway and Dunnes in Montree wouldn't play ball and now the works cannot be done until Irish Rail can find another window to stop their services for a day.

Anyone know what was the problem with Dunnes Montree?

You know that nice little lane way on the left, close to the Bridge, as one goes pass Griffins and the Hospital and goes under the bridge , before one head on to the Fire Station/ the old shop (not there any more)

That takes you to the back of Dunnes (I use to cycle all around the Dunnes Building back in the day when it was not open on a Sunday - technically, probably trespassing )

I'd image they might have issue with it interfering with their car park (which is huge and does not come near the side of the store) or maybe they have issues with any liability problems that they might have with cyclists using any of their land?

Would they need to purchase any land off Dunnes ? (who owns that plot of land?)

Is it possible to get all the way to the Shannon?

Ballymahon is near Lough Ree, rather than the Shannon river, but the greenway extends North to Cloondara where the canal reaches the Shannon North of Lough Ree.

    Maps here.

Or you can cycle 25 km South from Ballymahon to Athlone, and pick up the Old Rail Trail for 40 km back to Mullingar.

The canal towpath is surfaced as far as Ballymahon (cycled it 2 weeks ago).
The canal towpath is also surfaced from Cloondara to Longford.

The section between Ballymahon and the Longford branch of the Royal Canal was not surfaced the last time I was on it in March 2017 and I haven't seen any reports of it being done. When I did it, it was heavy going, grassy, wet and boggy in places.

Thanks. I have a personal goal of covering the entire Royal Canal by bike or foot. So far I've been from Dublin to Mullingar, every inch bar the close bit between the Liffey and North Strand Road.

There are parts between Dublin and Westmeath that are not suitable for cycling but we got through it - when you say you did it, do you mean on foot or on a bike?

you can cycle on a bike all the way
just a road bike with narrow wheels isn't always suitable
