The Lidl, Boots, and H&M offers have reappeared for me today after previously expiring.
I did not use them the first time around.

    Ah OK.

    Crap...I knew I should've driven more!...:pac:

You can try removing 1 card for the account and create a new account and used the removed card. It worked for but at the time I had only used the Lidl offer on my debit card.

So I spent €40 yesterday at a Topaz that doesn't show up on the rewards site when I click the Google Maps links. The transaction has showed up on my Internet Banking page as a Centra purchase. Does that mean I'm not going to be credited? Kind of annoying.
I would say not, as these offers seem to be predicated on Merchant IDs within the transaction. As far as Visa is concerned, your purchase was at a shop.

    It sucks.

Wonder if you buy something, get the reward and then go get a refund will the reward be taken off you?

Looks like if you don't use the offer, it will re-appear, it you have used it, it will be gone for good.
So basically all the "good" offers can only be used once (per card).

Does anyone have any idea of what the offers that other banks/companies offer and if these are comparable- the lidl one was good but other than that there doesnt seem to be much

I think posters need to be realistic about their expectations, the offers like Lidl and topaz (widely used retailers) are introductory offers to get people signed up.

Do posters really expect to be getting €15 of refunds every month from visa / their banks for normal purchases (i.e. Food and petrol!)? If so they need a serious reality check

I'm not sure is that aimed at me? But anyway- I was more posing the question to try get some context as I'm wondering how these compare.

Thanks...will try that - nothing to lose really as none of the other offers interest me.

EDIT: Don't see any 'Remove Card' option, only an 'Add Card', and I'm finding existing card can not be re-added.

If you go to My Account you should have your cards listed there, if more than 1 you should be able to remove them to be able to create a new account.

Does Smyth's Click and Collect get the cashback? Your card is charged online before you pick up the item.

Terms say you need to pay online, so I'm assuming you're fine if you pay before collection.

I was just on the point of switching to PTSB so if the offers don't stay at this kind of level I'll be off

Still waiting to see. Card was only charged from pending yesterday. So from yesterday will take around 5 days? to be seen on the AIB system? :) But I'm assuming it's system looks at transactions and if it sees WWW.SMYTHSTOYS.COM it flags it. I say in store purchases maybe have SMYTHSDUBLIN etc?

mine registered as VDP-WWW.SMYTHSTOYS So we'll see... :)

I guess you've never heard of the platinum card? I've been getting cash back every month for years

I guess you don't know the difference between a debit card and a credit card.

I guess you don't know that retailers pay a lot more charges for credit cards versus debit cards thereby the margin for a credit card provider is much greater.

I guess you don't know that the ratio of people who have a platinum credit card versus the number of people who have a visa debit card is absolutely huge. I.e. AIB in conjunction with visa and the retailers are funding this as a loss making promotion when they are refunding tens of thousands of customers who buy petrol / food that they were likely to buy these anyway.

In fact your refund scheme is a very good baramoter to how generous / unsustainable this aib scheme is. Despite the fact that aib make more money from your transactions you only get 0.5% back up to €225 each year, the Lidl offer was 28.5% back, topaz 12.5% back, boots 17% back.... - absolutely massive differences and the cost to aib / visa and merchant is amplified because of the number of people qualifying

I guess you are wrong in your assumptions. I was merely pointing out a fact that cash back has been available for years on an ongoing basis.

I set mine up last week, here's how it seems to work...
You make the purchase in the retailer and then as normal the transaction shows up as pending on your AIB Banking account, the next day or day after depending on the retailers payment provider the transaction shows within your account properly and when this happens the offer then disappears from your available offers. It then takes a full working day after this for the cash from the offer to appear in your account, eg transaction is showing within your account Monday, cashback from offer is in your account Wedneday.

The extra yearly charge for a Platinum card may be excessive for some.

I wasn't told anything, just interested in what andresat2 was apparently told by AIB. I spent €40 at the Topaz at Ushers Quay yesterday, but haven't got any e-mail or anything (may be a little soon I know). However, it shows up as "One Oil" online in my credit card account, so worried now that it doesn't qualify.
The web site, unhelpfully, doesn't list all the participating stores. Only a link to Google Maps with a search for all Topaz stations

Did you get the cash back in relation to your spending in Topaz (One Oil) at Ushers Quay.

    what extra yearly charge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,640 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

    Interesting.
I used to have one in the 90's and there was a charge and just checked and now no charge!
0.5% back up to max €225 a year.
Might have a look at that as I spend over 4k a month on my cc including expenses.

Back in the 90's I used to have money sitting in my credit card account and I got paid interest on it!!!

I basically use my credit card for everything. I'll always have a bit of cash in the pocket for small stuff, but otherwise it goes on the credit card. The more I spend, the more I get back. No transaction charges and it's all safe and insured.

I was looking at getting one too, is it any more save than a Visa Debit card now? I couldn't find any differences...

Visa debit requires having money in your current account.
Visa credit is effectively borrowed money, free for the first 50 or so days (which is handy when paying expenses out of pocket).

Yeah remember that all right, that was when interest rates were sky high compared to now!
Likewise on spending, everything goes on the cc, just have to remember to pay it off ever month.

I guess you are purposely trying to be evasive, why not just say there is no annual fee, after all it is unusual for a "platinum" card to not have a fee. However the rewards are not on par with a typical platinum card (AMEX / uk / us cards) so I don't really class it as a true platinum card

yes, I believe when you pay by debit card for eg to buy a voucher and a shop closes down the following week, you are snookered. but if purchase was made by credit card you can get your money back.

    http://www.cardwatch.org.uk/card-safety-online.html
Use credit instead of debit card whenever possible. It may sound counterintuitive but it is actually a better idea to use credit card to pay online rather than debit card. This is due to the fact that debit cards aren?t automatically covered by payment protection insurance. Also, they aren?t as closely monitored as credit cards which means there is a greater chance that a suspicious activity goes by unnoticed. You are therefore recommended to pay with credit card when shopping online and use debit card with extra caution.

yea and also no transaction charge on a credit card purchase

evasive????? I asked the dude a question which he gave sensible reply to... I think you are just a bit of a sh1t stirrer.

If you have no interest in the platinum card then that's fine, you go off and get your uk/us card . others clearly have an interest though and it does give you cash back which is better than getting nothing back at all in my book, and I've got a lot more through that than the new offers. the new offers are great, but it all adds up and I'm grateful for it all. I'm not getting into it anymore with you
