saying "ok Google play 2fm" works for me :) If I say RTE, 50% success works

It started working for me again last week. No reboots etc work to get it working when it stops.

Google Home now has support for Spotify, SoundCloud, as well as Bluetooth support. Also support for HBO, etc for more entertainment.

11.08 pm: Google Home will also support hands-free voice-calling from anywhere. Users have the option of linking their mobile number to the Google Home device as well. “No set-up required,” says Google.

11.07 pm: Google Home will also have a new feature called ‘Proactive Assistance.” Basically the Home speaker will give you alerts, notifications for traffic based on schedule.

11.05 pm: Getting an update on Google Home. It is launching in UK, Germany, Japan, etc. No, it is not launching in India.,

11.04 pm: Basically, users will soon be able to place an order, pay directly from Google Assistant app. No third-party apps needed on your smartphone.

11.o3 pm: Google Actions on Assistant will be extended beyond Google Home. Essentially third-party app actions can now be carried out on Google Assistant.

11.12pm: Google is also updating Chromecast devices, and they will show visual responses on your TV when you ask for help on the Google Home Speaker. Once again you can personalise the experience, based on the voice.

11.11pm: Google is also adding visual support for the Home speaker.

I suspect the voice-calling is likely to be US only for now. Probably tied into their Google Voice service which isn't available outside of the US.

I think the big ones for us are:

    - Can use any Bluetooth Speaker, nice for people who feel the speaker on the GHome isn't loud enough, you can now use any bluetooth speaker you might have or buy.

    - Spotify Free now works on GHome.

Ok, so while I'm loving the new features they are talking about, we are still waiting for a catch up.

    1) multi user support
    2) Google apps functionality.
    3) phone calls, as BK said, probably a long way off for anyone outside the us.

They said the calling can be set to show the caller ID of whatever phone you choose, default is private number.

Does it let you use a bluetooth speaker or does it only allow you to use it as a bluetooth speaker (i.e play music from your phone using the google home as a speaker).

Hope it is the first one, but think it might be the second:confused:

Seems to be US and Canada only for the moment as I expected.

You are right, it is the second, using GHome as a bluetooth speaker.

But now that we know it has the hardware for Bluetooth (this wasn't known until now), maybe they will add the first too eventually, fingers crossed.

BTW They are also adding support for creating calendar and reminders entries.

I dont get the hooh hah about the Bluetooth feature, it's not actually providing any additional functionality seeing as you were always able to cast to a Google home anywau, so what is the huge advantage of being able to do the same thing via Bluetooth!!

Not all apps support casting, Bluetooth allows you to cast any sound that might be on your phone.

Also, while they haven't mentioned it, it should mean that you can use GHome as a speakerphone for calls (separate to the new call feature only available in the US).

Can you cast from iPhone? If not, then it's a draw for iPhone users. Especially with the fact they have announced some assistant features on iPhone.

You can for apps that have casting support built in. Youtube, Netflix, etc.

But for instance non of Apples apps have casting, Apple Music, etc. So yes, bluetooth will help with apps like these.

So are all the changes announced just software related? No improvements in hardware or speaker sound etc?

Well they are activating the bluetooth radio in it, that is sort of hardware related.

I'm not sure how you could just change the speaker sound, unless you mean them introducing a whole new device?

I find the sound to be perfectly good and if you want better sound, you can always use any speakers you want with chromecast audio.

I actually think what they need is a small cheaper device to compete with the Echo Dot.

Having said all that, it is clear that Google Assistant will soon be coming to all sorts of third party devices, including speakers, AV's, soundbars, etc.

Sorry yes I meant a new updated device. Some of the tech websites were referring to Google Home 2 and I thought it would be a new device with a better speaker etc. I still haven't heard the home in action. I was about to pull the trigger but have a a baba on the way so my tech indulgences have taken a back seat for now! Hope to get my hands on one in the coming weeks.

Is the ability to play Spotify free a US-only development?

Still telling me I need a premium account.

or just pay 2.50 per month for the real thing ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 437 ✭✭WealthyB

    Hi Guys

Does anyone have a practical workaround for this scenario?

    I have 3 x gmail accounts:
    1. Personal. Google Music Access All Areas, and all my photos are here. Google Home is linked to this account.
    2. & 3. Work email

Trouble is, 90% of all calendar entries are in 2. and 3., so Google home is currently not seeing them at all :(

    Cheers!

or share a google music family plan with five friend which is €15/month for 5 accounts. I have this for my family and the kids love it as they can download whatever music they want to their phones and play offline.

It is also really cool being able to ask google home to play any sony at any time.
