Don't know why but it reminds me of this great song.

    Belgium

No I think that was the jury vote read out by Nicky Byrne? Televote would have been announced by Marty Whelan right at the end

    Looked up the English lyrics:

If one day someone asks about me
Say that I lived just to love you
    Before you, I only existed
Tired and without a thing to offer

My dear, listen to my prayers
I ask you to come back, that you come back to love me
I know that we can't love alone *
Maybe little by little you can learn again

My dear, listen to my prayers
I ask you to come back, that you come back to love me
I know that we can't love alone
Maybe little by little you can learn again

If your heart don't wish to do so
To feel the passion, If it don't want to suffer
Without making plans about what will happen
My Heart can love for the both of us

Glad Eurovision has been rescued from all that eastern " European " gimmickry and sh**e of past years - the Portuguese guy nailed it in his comment !

Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. Rest easy now.

As a bonus I'll give you the USSR which contributed a vast amount of countries to the Eurovision since its breakup, probably about 15.

They won because they look carefree with no special effects or dancing monkeys .

So that will be Ireland's dumbass mimic strategy next year chosen by the muppets that select the Irish songs - a soft acoustic ballad that is picked even if it's a crap song with talentless people, just because they think that's the direction to go now ...

Portugal won because they sang the song they wanted to sing, they got some sympathy votes and probably people of every age group liked it and above all it was popular. It resonated with people.

Just pick the best song Ireland, no matter what the genre or the person/people. If it resonates, it will do well. At least it will have a chance.

So let me get this straight
The miracles of Fatima started 100 years ago today, a brother and sister who saw the apparition at Fatima were canonised as Saints today by the Pope, and then this evening a brother and sister from Portugal pull off a surprise ( miraculous ) win in the Eurovision?
I'm calling it, this is strong stuff!!!

Eurovision should try push for a complete rebrand, move away from the cheese and turn it into a true pan European legit music competition. First move kick out Australia. It should be a strictly European affair.

It's quite promising for eurovision's future the Portugal's entry won. Perhaps it will go back to being an actual song contest rather than being kitch heavy.

Feck that. It'd be a complete borefest if that happened.

It's the whole anything can happen and sometimes does. Nobody really comes to Eurovsion looking for great songs.
Loads of alternative places to find what you like.

Can anybody explain it's popularity and appeal? Put it into words? It's gone right over my head.

The only thing it seems to have is that its a slow song compared to the rest but it's not sung particularly well or anything IMO. Is it the story behind the singer or something?

Bulgaria have a knack of doing very well in the final when they qualify - they've only qualified three times but have finished fifth, fourth and now second... :D

Moldova coming third is arguably the biggest shock of the night, don't think anyone saw that coming.

Whether you like the song or not, what I want to know is whether that was the most viewed arse ever, given there were millions watching.

Very popular opinion, but actually not true

No, it's just a lovely romantic song!

I dunno where the sympathy vote came into it - it was different, melodic and sung with passion and honesty - no gimmicks, just a guy singing from the heart - that's what impressed voters

Who knows - we had yodelling raps, a man singing a duet with himself, epic sax guy, eastern bloc teenie boppers, a dancing gorilla, it's all Eurovision and all impossible to analyse while sober.

It was cute. Little things like sharing the mic, the simplicity of it all.

Why? He didn't mention any particular act, but what he said was true I think. I mean we all like the cheesy, catchy songs but it's nice to see a song like this win.

I thought it came across as placing himself on a pedestal of "real music", as if he was only deserving of such status. I don't think all the rest of the songs fit in to your above description. Azerbaijan, for example was an interesting song with some depth to it. I'm not begrudging hom the win at all, btw.
