The Italian song has surpassed 100 million hits on Youtube ,the first Eurovision Song to ever do this .

That radio version is 3 minutes 35 seconds so they have had to cut half a minute off it to bring it down to 3 minutes for Eurovision.
The Eurovision edit is quite inferior but it should still easily do the business ,its one of the best songs of the last decade .

Yeah it's hard to look past Italy now. As you said, the Eurovision edit is indeed inferior, it makes it extremely repetitive.

I disagree it's one of the best songs of the last decade though, in fact I don't think it would win most years. 2017 is an exceptionally weak year.

Its an extremely catchy song ,a sing along song ,and the singer looks like a really down to earth guy .
This live version with the orchestra is brilliant

It would walk it in any of the last 5 competitions ,that song than won last year was pure crap by comparison.

1944 was far superior to Italy this year. I don't think this could have beaten Conchita either.

I really hope this song doesn't win, it is completely overhyped.

It would have walked it in 2012? Against Euphoria? Lolz.

Last year's winning song was dreadful, still hard to believe it actually won.

The worst winning song I can remember by far.

It gets so much hate, but I quite liked Running Scared :o It wouldn't have been enough to win most years, but I think it was certainly good enough to win the weak 2011. In hindsight though, No Tomorrow from Denmark is now my favourite song from that year.

Not sure what the worst winner ever is, I don't know much from before the early 90's but the worst winner from 1992 onwards is surely that utter tripe that won for Russia in 2008. Terrible, terrible song, and the only reason it won is because Bilan is so well known in Eastern Europe. An absolute crime that Ani Lorak lost to that.

I don't think Jamala could be faulted, it was a very strong performance. Most people can't deal with it when their own favourite doesn't win.

Who's seen any of the first rehearsals? Was never the biggest fan of Sweden's entry anyway, and this didn't do anything to sway me.

UKR'16 was like a bag nails and wailing stray banshee cats tumbling down a hillside.

Ita and Sweden have a good chance this year, but hard to foresee how long Italy's novelty tune will sustain.

Think the few outside growers with a good chance of making the top five
are also the some of the very highest odds ever seen.

I try my best not to watch the rehearsals, although usually cave in the end. Have been reading about them though, apparently Blanche was very underwhelming for Belgium. It's really not looking too good for them now, but still lots of time to turn things around.

So far I have to give it to Finland. They had the best rehearsal so far in my opinion. I really want Albania to do well, but their staging seems a little messy.

Can't process Finland it sounds like Enya but out of tune. Very basic layering/dymanics. Drags on a bit. Fine for 'sleepy sleepy beddybybyestimmes' (like so many other entrants).

One that is a sneaky grower is from a country I'd often spell incorrectly, It features an established Jazz vocalist, pre-chorous at 0:24, early full chorus at just 0:49. The weakest part if the 1st 5 seconds which sounds like a high-school musical demo. Around 400/1. Any guesses?

I believe it builds at atmosphere and had better staging than the other songs so far. It really fits the song.

Czech Republic is a song I really enjoy, but we have yet to see her staging.

Czech is one of the songs that can transcend across piano, guitar or even just on it's own as vocal solo (something Jazz singers often do), demonstrating it's sheer strength. Structurally, it could be the best structured song in the entire competition.

Might need to deploy a brief soul choir at the coda. Then again 'understatement' can be a big seller, particularity in this brazen competition of neon sale stickers. The singer would also fair well in one of those lovely lady competitions.

Seriously tho why is Australia still in the contest ? Thought it was meant to be a once off

She seems to have a lovely personality in interviews, I would like to see her qualify. Czech Republic only qualified once before in 2016, would like to see them back in the final.

You mean Australia isn't in Europe?? lol. What about Israel? Since all comers joined the Eurovision a number of years ago, it's become a joke. Perhaps next year, they'll announce, 'Come in Namibia. Can we have your votes please?'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭dogcat

The reason why Israel is in the contest is due to the fact that they are within the boundaries of the European Broadcasting Area (EBA), not because they are in Europe geographically. Hence why Morocco took part in 1980.

Yes, you don't have have to be a part of Europe to take part, you just have to be an EBU member. As mentioned above, Morocco have taken part before, Tunisia were due to partake in 1977 but withdrew. Lebanon were due to partake in 2005 but were banned after admitting they wouldn't broadcast the Israeli performance. As active members of the EBU, Egypt, Libya, Algeria and Jordan could all theoretically take part if they so wish, but it's highly unlikely they ever will.

The rules were clearly bent for Australia, and it was patently obvious to everyone when they were announced as a "guest" entrant that they were there to stay. It's hugely popular in Australia, gets very good viewing figures, and they've brought a lot more to the contest in the short time they've been in it than a lot of countries ever have. So whilst I'm not exactly thrilled they're in it, I'm not totally against it either. Eurovision is the kind of thing that's just going to keep getting better, and the EBU are obviously just going to follow the money.

And of course, Sirusho received eight 12s to Bilan's seven, yet only finished fourth...

Bilan's 12s, for the record, came from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia and Israel. And despite finishing runner-up, Ani received just the one 12, from Portugal.

In fact, no less than seventeen countries received 12s that year - even Germany got one (from Bulgaria) while finishing joint bottom, while Romania got two (from Moldova and Spain) while finishing 20th.

You can kind of see why Wogan huffed off after this contest... :o;)

Can't see the Turks winning anytime soon, news today is that Turkey bans 'TV dating shows', and this after blocking Wikipedia access.

Let the 'hummus see the bread' as PMcG would have said, if he hosted his show over there.

I actually realised that but for me, if it's the Eurovision Song Contest, then the country should be in Europe...

What's wrong with the voting is that so many people live in adjacent countries in Europe so they are actually voting from their own country, from the country in which they are now residing. Perhaps with all the Irish in Australia, we might get a few votes for Ireland.....lol
