Is it really worse than being in your mid thirties and using a name like PhuckHugh on an internet forum?

It's currently valued at 34 billion dollars following it's IPO earlier in March.
34 billion and it has yet to turn a profit. It lost circa half a billion last year and they have admitted that user growth is already slowing.

    Madness.

Im 29 and am not a big user of social media but I would use it a lot with my friends. I use it so that my gallery on my phone (and my friends gallery) doesn't fill up with unwanted photos. Its a handy way to send a photo of something that is not necessarily worth keeping.

Don't use it myself, but there was a groups of girls in front of me at the point the other night and all they did through the entire gig was take the same selfie and post it to what I presume was snapchat. They paid very little attention to the stage.

Seems to be an awful lot of people who go to gigs and 'experience' them thru the screen of their phone.
Like the proof of their attending is more important than the experience of attending.

Love Snapchat. My only method of communication with friends. Don't use filters that much though or selfies.
I'm young though so it's OK.

Don't see the need to constantly take pictures of something or myself. So I gather I'm not the target audience.

Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat etc etc.... all just one big pile of steaming poo in business terms. Somewhere down the line people will realise it and billions will be wiped out.

Teenagers use Snapchat, adults use Whatsapp.

Snapchat is really more of an "everybody look at me" communication format, which is what being a teenager is all about. Same as people who are famous for making youtube videos.

When you get older you realise that constantly trying to be the centre of attention is the quickest way to lose friends and poison relationships and most people grow out of it. One can argue that Facebook and Instagram are "centre of attention" apps, but it's more passive than Snapchat.

Snapchat is a great app. It's not everyone's cup of tea but it is a very useful and fun way to communicate visually with friends. Also a great tool for marketing, plenty of businesses, celebrities, major football teams etc use it to communicate with their audience. So it can't be that bad really.

Little snap chat trivia:- Snapchat was always intended for sending nude pics, it was originally going to be called peek-a-boo, hence the ghost logo.

As mentioned already - it's all validation.

    • Sheila goes on a night out - Snapchat story is updated 5-10 times to let the entire world know that Sheila is having a whale of a time and is all dolled up. Just ignore the fact that she's missed half of the night because she has spent it on her phone.
    • Bob goes to a rugby game - I know about Bob's jersey, his food, his pre match pints, his seat, I get to see live celebrations after tries, live footage of the game etc. Story is updated 5-10 times just to let the entire world know that Bob is having a whale of a time.

There seems to be this, not new, because it has been around for a couple of years now, but certainly recent phenomenon - whereby people have to document every activity they do. It's like if you haven't taken pictures/Snapchats - you haven't done it at all. People want others to see them have a good time - be validated, create this image of a fantastic life.

I find that people who are living the best lives aren't sharing it everywhere. I deleted Snapchat a long time ago, I have Facebook deactivated 90% of the year. I'm not missing out. Delete Snapchat/Facebook, turn off the phone and you might find yourself actually having a good time or actually participating on a night out or actually watching a match you go to.

Completely agree. When I misplace/forget my phone I'm less distracted and have a better time.

I like it - disappears after 10 seconds. Can send videos, funny faces, draw pics. It's good craic on nights out.

That's what they make you believe.

Its good craic and my kids flippin love it. Filters can be funny sometimes.

If you go on a night out and send 2 snapchats you've wasted about a minute. The idea that sending a snapchat means you aren't experiencing the night is bizarre. This thread also screams out of touch. Snapchat is very popular with people in their 20s so a lot of inaccurate generalisations in here..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,789 ✭✭✭PowerToWait

Obviously everyone's idea of fun is different but i really struggle to see the 'great craic' that people have with it. Fair enough for under 15s but after that i don't fathom.

But it's definitely not hurting anyone so....

I do think it's not brilliant to have kids basically glued to a screen 80% of the day.

There's also a decent amount of under 20 year olds that don't bother with it. They're also 'out of touch'?

Some people are curious as to its popularity is all.

Exactly - I've only asked what the attraction is. I've been met with - It's great craic - But with no real explanation as to what makes it great craic... Like I said, it appears to be people making funny faces into a screen, a lot. If that's what the world is about now then FML. I can't see how that would be appealing to adults but live and let live I suppose, could be doing a lot worse than talking to a screen incessantly I suppose.
