Industry to Consultancy Practice

How realistic would a move from Industry to a consultancy practice be?

I am a part qualified accountant (sitting final chartered exams this year) working in quite a broad accounting role at a medium sized manufacturing company. I'm happy where I am for the time being but I'd love to get into a consulting role at some point in the not so distant future, even if it were at grunt level.

I think I'd really enjoy the diversity of working with multiple clients and all that that entails (understanding company and core activities, understanding their issues, problem solving etc.). At some point I'd like to branch out and set-up my own product based business and that variety of exposure would be hugely beneficial.

I expect that it's probably an unrealistic hope on my part but I thought I'd ask anyway in the vain hope that I'm wrong.
