Call bird Bait

what do ye lads use for baiting a trap to catch a call bird.

3 or 4 hen eggs make a nest from straw or dead grass break one of the eggs and leave the broken shells in the nest with the other eggs set it up the night before where their is a few mags about, they be very aticve at dawn you can use a mag decoy beside the nest to draw them if you like but i found it worked just as well without it .

It can be tricky to get that first one. Those larsen mate traps are meant to be good for catching a call bird. Easy make too. Think there's a few videos on YouTube showing how to make one.

I used to put clingfilm at the bottom of the "nest" ...when egg was broken the yolk would remain in the nest...on the clingfilm. Worked well.

I also found cheap tinned dogfood was a favourite of theirs....used it some times

if you could get your hands on a dead chick you'll get them in the trap for sure.
