That's desperately unfair. Gavan Reilly is about as far from a tabloid journalist as they come these days. It's true he used to work for the journal and the journal is a pile of shoite but it doesn't follow that Reilly is at that level. If he was, he'd still be there.

Imo, he's at the very least a capable deputy for Cooper but as time goes by, cooper's personal biases and the imbalance of his show make me lean towards Reilly as my preferred option for that slot.

Reilly as a presenter is fine, however his tendency to head for lowest common denominator/sensationalist viewpoints is what sets him as tabloid in my opinion. See also, Jonathan Healy at NT.

Muireann has been a breath of fresh air this week in the 2-4:30pm slot

Her and Fergals JNLR figures will take a hammering from people turning over at 12 and not turning back at 2.30. It's what I do and most that I talk to do as well.

I posted this in the Foley thread earlier, but I think it's more relevant here, just to illustrate how far Today FM have fallen from their peak in the late 00's.

Looking at figures from Q3 2007. Foley had 172,000 then. Not sure if that was his peak, but he was down 17,000 on that when he left, albeit on an upward trend.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=54433741&postcount=4

Look at those figures though. My god it was definitely a different time for Today FM... In a decade they've gone from:

Ian Dempsey 240,000 to Ian Dempsey on 167,000 (down 73,000)
Ray D’Arcy 249,000 to Anton Savage on 164,000 (down 85,000)
    Ray Foley 172,000 to D&D on 115,000 (down 57,000)
Tony Fenton 143,000 to Fergal D'Arcy on 103,000 (down 40,000)
Matt Cooper 204,000 to Matt Cooper on 132,000 (down 72,000)

EDIT: Oh, and I'll just make an edit to acknowledge that overall radio listenership is down (particularly in that young demographic that they captured at the time) and it's also worth nothing that since 2007 they now have more competition from the Spins, Beat and iRadio who are now all taking larger chunks of that young audience. Just for balance.

When you tweet them tag 2fm and a few other stations and they'll most likely all offer a few other cds... is it Paul or Paula you won off?

Did anyone hear Dempseys sly digs this morning?

During the 7:20 gift Mario was doing a bit about the these three words quiz saying it was like one of the quizzes from 2007 where Ian said ah ya the good old days hey hey!!

Then during one of the news segments there was a piece about stress in the work place where Paul Collins asked Ian how is stress levels were where there was another big inside joke.

I reckon Ian is gone when his contract expires and he'll tell a few home truths before he goes.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. With the presenters on the station getting younger, Iano's increasingly looking like a relic from the dark ages. He's probably old enough to be the dad of some of the shiny new presenters. Maybe the powers that be have another washed up boyband singer or comedian in mind for the breakfast slot.

They have surely used up all the potential presenters left in that slot or are they going to change the station name to Ex-Comedians FM?

Nothing would surprise me any more. The days of presenters learning their trade on pirates/local stations is long gone.

The problem for Ian is that in the past when his contract was up for renewal he was able to use the threat of returning to 2fm breakfast as a bargaining chip but now that 2fm has changed so much himself and Today fm management know that's no longer an option.

I wonder is that really true though? When he handed in his notice 2FM, they didn't take it well. Wasn't he more or less frogmarched out of the building by security?

Absolutely, he was on the verge of a deal with 2fm in 2005, he Revealed this a few months later when he was a guest on the panel with Dara Ó Briain

John Clark springs to mind when he was finishing his last Jukebox show on 2FM! Though, it was a case of him jumping before he'd eventually be pushed.

Is the schedule changing? The app has Matt cooper on at 5:30-8

I'd fine that difficult that they would do that- the radio population as a whole collapses after 6/6:30 - they'd be starting the show at the last gasp and into the wake.
As for Iano - I don't know if 2FM would want him - is he the 'profile' they are going for - but then they are in need of listeners!

Would guess they screwed up the hour going forward the other weekend. They would miss a good amount of the drive time audience

Gives Newstalk Drive an hour and a half head start and Drivetime (RTE R1) an hour head start. Likely an effect of the time changing as you say.

There was an update to the iOS app released this evening which is supposed to fix the time bug

Yet the Chief Executive who has overseen the fiasco of the past couple of years gets to jeep his job.

    Odd.

The Chief Exec has only been in since last May...even if it may seem like years!

Have all the male presenters been given the day off? Since 9 it's been Clair McKenna, PMAC and Muireann...enjoyable listening actually! Mind you any day without Al Porter is an infinite improvement!
