Sounds like they couldn't be bothered.
If I remember correctly I had said this will be a cylinder issue.
When mine went of the 156 I had it back the next day.
    Suppose it depends on luck.

Initial garage diagnosed my issue as a faulty clutch master cylinder, but they were soo busy it took nearly a week before it was seen, and then it wasnt until the Monday that they called saying they couldnt do the job. Thus, it was trailered to the main dealer, and duly went to the back of their queue, waiting for them to get to it at some stage when parts finally arrive. I'm not overly concerned, they'll call when its done I suppose

They are an arse to change (access at the pedal is fiddly, brake pipe is fiddly, subframe in the way etc) but to say they couldn't do it, a competent garage... More like wouldn't! :(

I know a lad in New Ross that would be able to do the job if that's any use...

Could have brought it to Fermoy Garage.
    Those lads would fix anything.

There's a well known law (at least well known in these parts) that the sun coming out and a freshly shined car must have a photo taken of them, and seen as how I was forsaken by the sun the very minute I stopped cleaning, I'm taking this rare opportunity:

    You reckon?
I thought that too until I got them to do something for me.

    I don't know.
Did they do something for you?
    Obviously yes and not happy?
Wouldnt know them to let anyone down to be fair to them, Then again it has been a long time since I had any dealings with them.

Asked them to sort 2 issues.
Kinda shrugged me off when I tried to explain what I felt it was.
He just grumbled they'll find whatever it was.
Left the car for 2 days with them.
Got car back and issues not sorted.
One was intermittent so only realised when nearly home.

Shame about the GT issues Cian, a big part of buying mine was knowing the lads in TI autos already, and them being fairly close by. Not that Alfa's have a reputation of course!

That brings back memories. I had a path worn to New Ross when I had my 156.

Nice car, ( prob stupid question) any reason why some ST come with factory tints whilst others don't? Is it optional extra?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭Gavman84

Cheers. Ya it's an extra like everything with ford lol  it's on the list too do tho!

Ford man myself, ST next on list, but don't want to part with my titx just yet, if only the wife would take it then I'd have best of both worlds :)
Got mine tinted and it was 120 e for back and boot tints, 5 year warranty. Makes the censored rear view mirror redundant though.

My car history over the last months has been colourful and some Alfa Romeos have tested my patience (even though the 156 1.6 is still as reliable as ever!).

Decided as such to try something different and picked up the below Volvo S40. It's an '07 facelift SE Lux model so has some nice options, such as the Xenon lights and full leather etc etc.

Now comes the slightly interesting part... it's not a diesel thankfully. This one is the 2.4 naturally aspirated 5 cylinder petrol. It's 170bhp which obviously won't set the world on fire but it's a nice engine to drive with the manual gearbox. Very willing to rev and has the most glorious 5 cylinder noise. :)

Have to say I am/was very surprised by it, in a positive way.

You'd just be expecting it to be a 1.6d.
I really like the S40, for a car that came out 12 years ago, it has a great interior. Still looks reasonably fresh today too.

Yep, you're hitting the nail on the head why I think I like it... Drove past a bunch of lads there the other day let it rev out and got the heads looking....at a Volvo S40!!

Test expires at the end of July, hoping to get a 2 year test on it before then. If it passes that then I'll look into a stainless system for it for the craic. :pac:

Edit - Interior is lovely, still holds up remarkably well.

Makes you wonder why volvo only have it 170 bhp.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,328 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    They had a 2.5 T5 version with 225bhp too.

    Seen those, proper fast.
Wonder if it was an engine that was intended for the American market?

I've been tempted myself by the 2.4 in the S80, there's a nice number of them for sale, extremely good value considering the spec, this one in particular caught my eye during the week, belt and waterpump replaced...

Yeah they're very common in the US. Infact I think it's the smallest engine they sold in the US. Here they are rare and more so in manual. Most are auto.

Those S80's are lovely alright and certainly cheap to buy. In the S80 the 2.5t is only 197bhp.

Also they are taxed as a 2.6 in Ireland meaning the tax is another €200 a year over €1080 rate.

Finally, while I owned a V70 with the geartronic gearbox and it was faultless, I bought this car as it was a manual and I have heard too many horror stories of auto boxes failing. Volvo's in particular are prone to it as its an Aigin box - not a ZF auto.

I reckon the turbo might hide some of the noise of the 5 cylinder too. I have to say it's the most wonderful noise, I can't wait to get a proper exhaust on it.

Gave it a wash and a lick of tyre shine yesterday. Silvery brown is ideal for hiding the dirt. I've given up on the plastic claddings but I dont think they look that bad once they are evenly faded. Great car but have a huge itch to change.
