    Trade was pocket change.
The Patriots owe Dwayne Allen $5 million in cash in 2017, $5M in 2018 and $7.4M in 2019. Really smart move by Belichick here.

    — Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe)

$5m a year ain't terrible in this market.

    Colts fan.

Dwayne is a good hard working guy. Had an excellent first year with us but his last 3 jave been plagued by injuries. He is a very good blocking TE and an above average recieving TE. His production up until last year would have been capped as Coby Fleener was our number one TE. When he was our number one TE last year, after getting a big contract and letting Fleener go, he was outperformed by Jack Doyle, who resigned yesterday.
The thing is he didnt live up to his wage last year and we were going to pay him $6m in 2018, $8.4m in 2019. Weve a new gm so I guess he didnt feel comfortable paying that sort of money on a now 2nd best TE. Im sure he will be on a different wage in NE, I think Bill can get good production in him, he was never suited to our vertical offense in Indy. His style should compliment Gronks, but obvious Dwayne isnt as good as Bennett.

I think this is good for us too. We have a solid TE in Doyle and were in desperate need of rebuilding our defense, so we would be hopeful of getting a decent player with the pick.

Edit: just saw the last post, 5m a year is about right for Allen.

Stephon Gilmore coming to NE according to Schefter. Wow, surely he's getting top dollar, seems unlikely we'd pay Butler too.

Wow, surprised with that, but we'll take him!

Butler must be really pissed right now.

Gilmore is looking for top CB money so it'll be interesting, maybe he took a small discount to be on a contender.

I feel Butler is a better CB than Gilmore, so more deserving of that money but i doubt we'll pay two CBs top money, can't have $30ish million tied up in two CBs. So hopefully (and most likely) Butler will be playing on his $4m deal for the year and we can work something out next season.

Anyone else think the Pats are being a little aggressive with their own players? Bennett talked about getting paid as a Sb winner, trade for Dwayne Allen, Logan Ryan looking for big cash, sign Gilmore in Free Agency!

It's like they're packing the bags for their Free Agents to be....

this seems like the busiest and most rumour bound off season that I can remember for quite a while.

Bye Bye Butler. Disappointed we don't want to pay him

He could still stay, apparently he's looking for a lot more than we're willing to offer. Maybe the thought of him being traded to the Saints and Gilmore's arrival may make him reconsider.....

If you told me a year ago that we'd lose all 4 of Hightower, Collins, Jones and Butler, I'd never have believed it. Funny how things happen.

Having said all that, if Cooks does come in, it may be sufficient to only need a defense that can hold teams to 28 points :)

I know he could still stay but I think he will get what he wants elsewhere and another team will either trade us for him or gamble on the loss of a 1st round pick on him. I just dont understand why we wont pay him.

Looks like we're still negotiating with Blount, and Harmon is expected to stay also.

Not the priorities I had but there's not much better out there in FA at a reasonable price tag that could replace them, so happy they're staying.

Around 14m a year for Gilmore. Can't imagine Butler even looking for that so strange one. Hightower wants 15m a year seemingly

Alan Branch resigned on a 2 year deal worth around €12m. Glad to have him back.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,510 ✭✭✭Hazys

Vital piece in the D, its great that he's resigned.

Apparently there are positive talks between Hightower and the Patriots about a new deal.

Duron Harmon is resigning, who is an underrated part of our defense. With the secondary and D as awhole looking like its going to have a massive shake up, its nice to have some continuity.

4 years, $20m apparently. Not too bad.

In this market and with the Cap increasing to $167, $5m a year for a player whos plays 33% of snaps on D isn't bad and he's getting better and better each season, won't be a superstar but certainly a solid contributor. $167/53 players is an average of $3.1m a player so paying a bit over isn't terrible.

    Yikes

$40m guaranteed - most we've ever given to a defensive player. A good $12.5 million more than the previous owner of that record, Devin McCourty.

Gilmore was considered super talented when he was drafted although he hasn't quite lived up to that in Buffalo. Finally made the Pro Bowl last year but his play has often been up and down.

Coming off arguably his worst season since his rookie year.

$40m is a lot to guarantee. Unless Butler is looking for something crazy, I'd have liked to seen that money diverted to him.
Guess Bill sees this as an opportunity to have two No1 CB's this year. It looks like a strong secondary if that's the case.

It certainly looks like BB is trying to repeat what he did at the start of the 2000's and that's win three Superbowls in four years.

    All aboard for number six!

I like the pick up, but the deal seems so unPatriot like! (Gilmore obv)

I hear more positive rumours from the Hightower negotiations which I hope are true, Butler must be thinking WTF right now by the way, serious secondary on paper at the moment, see how it lines up come the new season.

Branch, Harmon, two good players to have coming back. I think Blount could go either way, I am sure Bill wants to bring him back, and I am sure he wants to come back, but if someone makes a silly offer he will go. Can't blame him either tbh, right now I feel about 80% confident he will be coming back for one more year.

I like the Dwayne Allen pick up also, need another good blocking TE and he has a good potential upside with very little risk. I hope we do keep Jimmy, I'm a fan, always felt he had a bit more to him then the usual draftees we take to back up TB. Every season is now potentially Brady's final one in New England and in case he drops off the cliff this coming one having Jimmy around would be a nice option to have,a decision to be made next year then.

The problem is that with us giving that money to Gilmore and possibly huge money to Hightower we cannot afford to pay Jimmy G and he is gone in a year's time.

Jimmy will be gone before the 2017 season starts. Cleveland will throw a sh1t load of picks at us for him. We have no intention of keeping him. We only will if Bill doesn't get what he wants.

Ryan gone to Tennessee. Hearing very little about Hightower

Ryan going is a loss, but I think easily replaceable. He had certainly improved lots in the past 2 years and I'm glad for him that he got a good deal with the Titans. He seemed a decent sort too. I'd still prefer him over Rowe, but if we get around to signing Butler long term, with Gilmore on the other side, then I think that slot cover spot can be sorted much more easily.
