Some great Patriots coverage this week on NFL Network and after all Brady was put through in recent years, it's great to see (and long overdue) all now worshiping Brady as the GOAT. NFL films showed a lovely clip after the SB win, Blount was on the field, goes over to Brady's mum, puts his arm around her and says "We won this for you."..."We won this for you."

A few quirky records were set as well as the obvious biggest comeback/most qb yards etc.

First team to win the SB without getting a PAT.
First team to win the SB with a total 'gametime when leading' of 0mins 0seconds.

MMQB podcast tomorrow has the first part of his conversation with Tom Brady. Reading some of the pieces from it going to be well worth a listen

    http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2017/02/13/tom-brady-montana-super-bowl-51-nfl-patriots-peter-king

    First score good read
Atlanta 28, New England 3 (third quarter, 8:31 left)

NFL Films captured Brady going up and down the sideline, exhorting his teammates: “Let’s go! Let’s show some fight! Let’s play harder! Harder! Tougher! Everything!”

“It was similar to what I had felt at halftime,” Brady said. “We came out of halftime saying, ‘Look, we’ve had 20 minutes time of possession, we’ve run 45 or 46 plays, we’ve done a good job moving the ball up and down the field, we just have nothing to show for it because of a missed third-and-one, a fumble in their territory, an interception return for a touchdown in their territory, because of poor execution in the red area … We had over 200 yards passing in the first half [actually 184], so it wasn’t like we were in there at halftime saying, ‘Hey, how are we going to move the ball?’

“So we come out for the second half, defense does a great job getting a stop, which was exactly what we needed, we’re down 21-3. And we come out there on offense and throw an incompletion on the first pass of the second half, which was close to being caught but we didn’t come up with it, then a third down to Julian [Edelman], I hit him running across the middle and who knows if we would have gotten the first down, but we didn’t come up with it and it was just more of the same. … So we come off again, and I’m like, ‘Guys, at some point we all gotta just start making the plays.’ [Atlanta] went down the field and scored to put us down 28-3. And at that point, you can say a lot of things, but ultimately it comes down to what we do.”

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said after the game that Atlanta played more man coverage than he expected. That meant the Patriots didn’t have as many easy short throws as usual. Combined with the fact that Atlanta’s run defense throttled the Patriots’ ground game in the first half (14 carries, 35 yards), the Patriots had to fight for things that often were easy in their previous 18 games. On this drive, Brady converted a fourth-and-three from his 46 on a quick out to Danny Amendola for 17, victimizing Falcons corner Brian Poole. James White took a Brady flip five yards for the touchdown that gave New England’s sidelines some hope, even if Stephen Gostkowski missed the extra point.

“We just needed to execute one drive, and after that drive we’ll come to the sidelines and we’ll talk about the next drive,” Brady said.

“We had an entire quarter left,” McDaniels said a week ago. “We knew we’d get three possessions at least.”

    That was all they’d get.

Daboll is the new OC at Alabama.

Daboll is the new OC at Alabama.

Be interesting to see how he gets on. Wealth of experience and him and Saban go way back and you know BB and Saban most likely discussed him being friends and all.

Another inside track on any Alabama prospects coming into the league too, which is nice!

If anyone's looking to get to a game this year, Norwegian Airlines just launched perfect cheap flights from Cork to Provenience (30mns south of Foxboro). Just had a look at flights, looks to be about €130 return without bags.

From Cork, fly out Saurday afternoon, home overnight Monday night (2 night trip, one day off work!)

From Dublin, it's a longer trip: Fly out Friday afternoon, home overnight Tuesday night

There's Shannon flights too but need to spend the week.

Could work out cheaper than going to a London game!

Presuming season starts September 7th. Fly out the Wednesday and come back the Saturday would be €300. Very tempting

Anyone else concerned we might have seen the last of Hightower in New England?

He's been mouthing off about "getting what's his" in free agency, and reading this from Reiss has me concerned. I had completely forgotten that OLB salaries are taken into account for an ILB franchise tag.
If the Patriots place a tag on soon-to-be-free-agent linebacker Dont’a Hightower, the only option I see the team considering is the transition tag. That would be around $11 million on a one-year term, and give the Patriots (who paid Hightower $7.751 million in 2016) the right of first refusal on any offer Hightower receives in free agency. Because the franchise tag is so rich (at anywhere between $14.5 million-$15 million on a one-year deal), a strong case could be made that it actually creates more leverage for Hightower than the team, as he could shut things down in negotiations and position himself for free agency again next year. That’s why I don’t see the team going in that direction, and it’s the seldom-used transition tag or no tag at all."

I'm just worried someone is going to make him a massive offer we don't want to match.

From the Patriots point of view I can see why they don't want to overpay, or pay near top money, for Hightower. The guy is a rock and plays so tough, that he gets injured and misses time (or plays when below 100% healthy).
He's a team captain, handles the communication on D, well liked, and has made big plays for the Pats. As a first rounder he's made some good money, but this is a big contract for him; a few more years of dealing with injuries and this may be his only big contract.

I could def see the Pats use the franchise tag, even as rich as it is.

It's strange though. Jones, Hightower, Collins and Butler were the guys we needed/wanted/thought to tie up (or 3 of the 4); and we may only have Butler at the start of next year!

I'm with you on that and what worries me is he has two rings in the bag, so he might be satisfied with that and now be content to follow the money. You couldn't blame him for that, but with Jones and Collins moved on, I'm assuming they are prioritising keeping Hightower and will make him an enticing offer. Hightower made two massive plays in our last two SB wins, he's a proven leader and a big game player. So afaic we have to keep him. Hightower and Butler are my two priority contracts and hopefully they'll get tied up in due course.

We will tag him for 1 year and that will give him 14-15m for the year. Luke Keuchly is the highest paid ILB and is one 64m over 5 seasons just over 12m per year. Given the Franchise tag figures for ILB in 2016 were close to 14m so you figure he will get tagged and play for 14-15m. The year after we will have to pay him or lose him.

We got a 5th round compensatory pick this year.

And, if I'm not mistaken, we get the 3rd round compensatory pick that the Browns were given (for Alex Mack) as part of the Collins trade.

Draft Picks, which includes losing a 4th round pick as part of Deflategate, which was acquired from Seattle, 132nd pick I think.

    First round (32)

    Second round (64)

    Third round (96)

    Third round (103, from Cleveland)

    Fourth round (137)

    Fifth round (163, from Denver)

    Fifth round (183, compensatory)

    Seventh round (239, from Detroit)

Didn't we lose our fourth round pick this year over that stupid thing that I refuse to name?

bye bye Hightower. Madness not to tag him.

I'm just hoping it's a repeat of what we did with McCourty, but with Hightower I'm not as confident. With all the cap room teams have, someone will give him a huge deal.

What I will say is, even though following a value model has worked out well for us the majority of the time, I'll be so, so disappointed if we lost Collins, Jones AND Hightower.

We will lose him someone will pay him. whatever about Collins and Jones, Hightower still adds a ton of value to that front 7 and losing him I think will set us back this season unless we find a quality replacement. I mean who else do we have left in that front 7 at this point that offers what he offers? For me there is no replacement for Hightower in the draft or on the FA and he was vital for that Superbowl win.

I was pretty confident that Hightower would get paid and if it's not happening I'm wondering why. Like right now we've got close to $62.5 million in cap space for 2017 and we are in better shape for 2018.

Perhaps his injury profile is giving the team pause? He does tend to pick up knocks on the regular.

Last off-season was a breeze as we basically had nobody hitting free agency so we kept the same team that went to the AFC Championship and we just added a couple of low cost veterans like Hogan, Bennett and Long, it was a perfect scenario. The biggest name we lost last season was Akiem Hicks, a player we picked up mid-season who was a decent contributor.

This off-season is going to be tough. We have a ton of players hitting free agency and no way we keep even half of them. I'm still team "In Bill We Trust" so i see the off season going like this: we lose half of our free agents, replacing them with 2nd and 3rd day free agents and then Bill will trade out of the 1st round, gather a ton of picks and fill the roster with a lot of Rutgers players. Its not going to be fun to watch but it generally works out in the end so we'll be one of the best teams in the league again next year and for years to come.

Its also asking a lot to pay to pay Hightower top LB dollars when he really only plays 2 out of 3 downs.

Schefter reporting we're not trading Jimmy, no matter who calls, no matter what offer. He's staying with us.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,905 ✭✭✭TOss Sweep

Jimmy sticking around now makes it important for us to keep Hightower or find a quality replacement for him because that trade would have been a nice deal of picks that we could have used or dealt. Going to be a long off season at this rate.

Looks like we worked out Jared Odrick he could be decent if we decide to pull the trigger on him but our front 7 is going to take a beating and I hate to think we will concentrate on our front 7 again when we could be covering a lot of positions this off season. Our needs are all over that defense now.

    Chris Long wont be back:
Thank you Pats Nation. As a player you've given so much support to, I owe you an explanation as to why I'll be moving on in FA... even if it isn't a big deal. This year and this opportunity gave me a ton. I made lifelong friends in a great locker room and became a champion. I'm so thankful that Coach B (the GOAT) took a chance on me and allowed me the opportunity to play a small part in this wonderful year. This has zero to do with money, etc. It's the right move in my heart because I want to get back to being the player I was before. I'm thankful for my role this year, but as a competitor, I'm itching to do what I do best. It was important to say thank you personally. You may not remember me much, but I'll always remember y'all!! #driveforfive #missionaccomplished

Or perhaps a message to the rest of the league that you'll have to pay a a hefty bill for Jimmy but it could be Belichick not wanting to let him go but with Brady and his insane dedication to keeping his body in shape he may well have at least 2 years left. It'll be hard to resist offers for Jimmy when he's eating cap while Brady will continue to deliver on the field, barring injury.

That is it really most likely no one offered the Pats what they wanted I would assume. OR maybe we do see him as the future and plan to lock him down.

Jimbo is not really eating a lot of cap right now only 1m ish this year the last year of his rookie contract. The thing is there is no big risk keeping him either. If we decide he is the future in New England after 2017 we will pay him if not we will let him go. I wouldn't be surprised for us to lock him down with a minimal contract right now to extend his current contract. Jimmy will have a big decision to make if we try extend him now or at the end of 2017.

On Chris Long, he took a pay-cut ($1m base salary) to play with us this year because he wanted to be on a contender. If we win the Super Bowl, I think he's less likely to stay than if we lose, he could see it as he got his ring, now he can get one last pay day. On the flip side, he's now got the taste for success, no way he could go back to a losing franchise.

    Called it*!
