Right so n*gger is the equivalent to kiwi now is it? N*gger isn't a colour by the way, it refers to people - not dogs or a shade of brown. This is utterly ridiculous like, it's clear you wouldn't care what the implications are behind that word because you're small minded and ignorant to be honest.

Someone earlier on asked what casual racism is, this is a typical example of it really - some eejit who for the life of him can't see anything awry with calling a dog n*gger for the laugh. Or, more likely, is just a plain bigot.

    Oh, f**k off.

Bit snowflakey there mate, I thought you were some badass who didn't care what people said?

Unfortunately for you in most of modern society people will tend to call you out when you come out with bigoted nonsense so I wouldn't be taking it all too personally.

I came over from Scotland as a 10 year old in 1999, everyone sang it with 'n*gger' in the song and I was bloody flabbergasted. First I had seen kids not understand that was as bad a word as f*ck was. Had to inform my fellow colleagues that they were being racist. Pretty sure no-one had a clue what I was on about.

Millions of people in America watched the tv episode where the character recited this rhyme and there was no outcry. That's because "catch a tiger by the toe" is not racist. Every schoolkid in America says it and I think it's use might even be older than the racist version

They'd have a very different view if they new the original words although kids can be cruel. Young boys around the world torment their sisters and parents. Young girls can be vicious. We all have the image of the lovely school children that are obedient. Fact is many of these children play harmlessly not realizing how offensive their words are. We call it bullying and name calling is a part of being a kid the not so nice part.

You tried telling Irish 10 year olds in 1999 that they were being racist? I guess you were just a sophisticated Scot. Can I say Scotty or is that just a Star Trek thing?

Was wrecking my head for the last half hour or so about which film do I remember the rhyme being used in, where the actor raises his voice at the end and when he says 'MOE!'.

Anyway, just remembered, it was (if anyone wants to play at home cover your eyes now):
Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon just before he blows a hole in the South African's fish tank.

If memory serves me well it's also the method that Zed uses to choose between Butch and Marcellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction.

Nonsense, You can not be born a racist you have to learn to be one.
Can you learn to be gay too, or is that something that can be unlearned?

Jesus Christ. That's some mental gymnastics you're performing there.

And in Natural Born Killers. None of it had any racist suggestions at all.

Didn't Southwest Airlines go through this crap a while back and the case was bounced out of court? Can't google at the mo. Up to my eyes in work.

Movies are full of racism, sexism, whatever you like. You could start a forum to discuss how offensive each and every film could be. I wouldn't envy the PC brigade to go out and deem what is and is not offensive.

Those aren't the original words. The rhyme has existed in many forms for centuries. If the rhyme itself is so offensive, even without the offensive term, then it wouldn't be heard in every school yard across the country because parents and teachers would have something to say about it.

It's genuinely not meant to be any mental gymnastics, I just don't buy into what's often referred to as the "blank slate" theory as though concepts of natural discrimination can immediately be termed racist, as though they are intentional when coming from a place of ignorance (the idea that someone doesn't know any better).

That's why I also questioned the concept of 'casual' racism, but FTA explained it well. Before he explained it, I thought it had a different connotation entirely (ignorance on my part, unintentional). I didn't "unlearn" anything I had learned before, it's still something I learned. I simply learned something new.

No mental gymnastics required, but the point is that sometimes racism, or any other kind of "ism", isn't always inherently maliciously intended - it's based on ignorance from simply not knowing any better. Through experience is one of the ways any of these "isms" can be overcome.

The rhyme passes down from one generation to the next and was popularized in a age when racism was at its height. Schoolyard taunts IMO.

Exactly, No one is born a  racist you have to learn to be one. Anything you learn you can unlearn.

define "a little while". as a child growing up in the 70s the N word wasnt used.

Grew up in 80's and N word was obligatory in eeny meeny. Not saying it's right BTW.

Kids still use it today but it's tiger!

Still though... as much as I'd love to I'm not gonna stop them from using the tiger version... I'd offer a replacement but all I can remember was

    Ip dip dog 5hit...

    Or

My mother gave your mother a punch on the nose.

Anyone know the rest of Ip dip?

Hmm. 'We' always knew it as " Ip Dip Dog Sh!t You Are Not IT ". The person ending up as 'It' generally being the lone chaser of the rest of us.

What was that game when one person stood facing a wall. The rest of ye tried to get to them. They'd spin round and try to catch ye moving. So much trust and simple honesty involved there, when ye think about it.
