Happy to pay a sub for extra pods - I hope they go down the road of covering more diverse subjects, politics etc

Unrelated, but often wondered what Sky/BT make of media companies earning revenue commenting on or generating clips off the back of their content.

Can't think of anything more boring than an international soccer podcast, the football show struggles for content during international weeks as it is.

I'd say a small % of the lads audience are arsed about LOI too, not saying that's right, just reality.

There are few words that make my heart sink like "Ken was in Malahide this morning..."

Best of luck to them but I've never paid for a podcast and I won't be starting now.

Me either, struggle to get round to listening to all 'my' podcasts/radio shows/audiobooks as it is...

Would anyone have any idea of the current number of downloads they get? They are usually top ten in the charts here.

No, iTunes just doesn't give out that information. Soundcloud has a counter so you see how often each episode is listen to that way (click on "The Second Captains Podcast"). Very roughly - 37k to 40K.

This has been coming since they lost the sponsorship deal, no way the IT could keep funding the five of them plus pay for guests etc.

I'm torn as to whether I'll subscribe or not. I only just about get through the four shows a week as it is between when I'm running and going to work, I'd never listen to six a week. If I can't just download them straight from iTunes it'll be difficult for me to listen to them when running. Also, Murph gets on my tits far too often..

On the other hand they've given me fantastic entertainment for free for nearly four years and I want to see them succeed as a result and feel they deserve my support. Also, living abroad, the podcast is a great way to keep in touch with Irish sport. I think I've just about talked myself into giving it a shot as long as I can get it through iTunes.

Thanks foxtrot based on those figures on sound cloud alone say 20k pay that's 100,000 a month. Which would be a nice chunk of change for the guys, wouldn't think the times was paying anything close to that. Hope it works out for them, I'm going to see what the content is first.

I wonder how this played out in practice? Did the Times cut their allowance and force them to do something to 'monetise their content'?

Falls under Fair Use, not much they could do about it even if they did have a problem. I'd imagine they wouldn't have a problem though, it's free advertising for them at the end of the day.

Let's take the 40k figure as the audience. Not a hope in hell would you ever get a 50% uptake on a subscription. If it were that easy, all podcasts would be doing it. That would be €1.2million a year for a relatively niche Irish sports podcast.

A 5-10% uptake would be impressive. (Which to be fair would still net each of them in the region of €1500 a month assuming the IT takes a cut, which isn't to be sniffed at)

Wish them all the best but won't be subscribing. If all my podcasts started charging €5 a month I'd be up shīt creek. I'll continue to listen to the free shows, hopefully they remain largely the same and don't flog the paid content with the tired old joke of 'so for just €5 you can get how much great content murph?' ..'well Eoin, for just €5 you can get 16 more hours of sublime blah blah blah'

Sorry but as much as I enjoy the podcasts aside from Murph I could never bring myself to pay to listen to him.

    Ah, no way.

I said I hope they do some more niche sport stuff a few posts back.

Obviously I meant Dog Chat & the Pitch & Putt news. And, of course, Administrator of the week.

Don't know if I'll bother. I'll miss it but I'm not that into rugby, hurling, golf, US sports, boxing or anything else they cover so it would be just Gaelic and football I'd be paying it for and these days OTB is better for both for me.

I agree with some other posters though that the Tuesday and Thursday format has been going stale for a little while.

SC really need to improve their GAA coverage. It's dull.

1500 a month would hardly be worth their effort

Ill sub to support and see how it goes, years of free entertainment so ill shell a few pound for daily pods.

Jaysus lads, some fair stingey bastards in this thread. Over 10 years of free entertainment from the lads and they're reluctant to pay €5 a month to support them. Were people in Ireland always this stingey or did the recession play a big part in that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,252 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

People just have an aversion to paying for something they used to get for free.

And something that may not be of interest to them (e.g. Some like gaa, some like niche stuff etc.), it will depend what the extra slots cover, also otb will still be doing it for free.
No one owes them anything, for years it was their paid job (on Newstalk). They are in a new market now and as I've said I hope it works. I'm not being stingy just not going to pay for something til I know it's something I want.

What's their relationship with the Irish times anyway? IT's effectively just their sponsor, right?

An extra 16 hours of good quality sports coverage for the price of a pint. That sounds like good value, it's not going to break the bank. I'll be supporting it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭Hoppermcgrath

Would you miss the podcast if it was gone? If the answer to that question is yes, then personally I don't think you have to think too long and hard about whether to support it, especially at a pretty small fee. I also think it's pretty naive to think that the free pods on a Monday will continue in perpetuity regardless of whether this subscription model succeeds. One is likely very dependent on the other as people have got to make a living.

    16 hours a week?

I do my best to get through the four hours on the bus as it is.

    16 hours per month

I will sign up to support the lads initially but a lot will depend on how to get the content, if I cant get easily via an app or iTunes then I'll lose interest and stick with the 2 free.
Brave move but I do wonder is it down to the IT pulling the plug as they couldn't get a sponsor and was getting too expensive. Anyway I wish them all the best

    e. I see it's per month

I'll probably subscribe. But can't see €5 being the end game.

They said on Twitter that you'll be able to get the subscription based podcasts through iTunes and most other podcast apps.

Interesting, they have outlined what the shows are:
    • The Second Captains Podcast
    • Second Captains Football
    • Ken Early Politics Show
    • All breaking news podcasts

That's actually something I asked about a while back, might have to get sub now...

They mention as well that you'll get a private link to get all shows on any podcast player. I assume they're clever enough to link this to usernames/etc so access can be revoked once you stop paying, things like that...
