What does that have to do with the M20? Local Authorities have nothing to do with motorways.

Nothing allocated towards the M20 by either central or local government.

The maintenance of Regional roads really needs to be taken away from the local authorities. The amount of time and money that is spent by local council crews is an absolute disgrace, not to mention the backhanders that obviously goes on by local plant hire firms, who have machines on constant hire even if there is no work.
The responsibility for these roads should be handed over to TII, who have a structured maintenance schedule using private contractors.
The difference in Signage and Roadmarking between N & R roads is a disgrace, the local authorities can't even see their signs behind hedges, let alone wash them.

No point expecting that until the project is reactivated.

Haven't they allocated a million this year to rexamine its "viability" or such nonsense? Meanwhile people still die and are in accidents with frightening regularity. Put that money into something useful i.e. Building the thing.

    Here's a plan!

Is there anyone in a position to make videos of this road that supposedly links our 2nd and 3rd cities - if so, perhaps a compilation of such material could be uploaded to YouTube to create quite an internet sensation if executed correctly. Enough hits might provoke action out of pure embarrassment on the part of our government. Remember, so many in our political circles are very conscious of how Ireland looks internationally - that's a few buttons for us to press!!!

good idea, just the section through Ballybeg and Buttevant should do it. That's the worst bit

Is that the bendy narrow road bit beside the quarry?

I often use this example, but looking at old maps its appears to be on the exact same alignment as it was in the late 1800s.

I heard it hadn't been changed since the 1700s.

does that surprise you? Most roads will be ancient routes with only the Turnpikes, Famine relief schemes. Military roads and modern roads (etc) varying from that.

Yes but most national routes that were deficient were realigned slightly in the 1900s, especially if they were exceptionally twisty/narrow. Somehow the Ballybeg bends was not realigned despite being narrow and extremely twisty.

I believe the section was widened slightly in the late 80s...I'm sure it used to be much worse (if possible)

PS have a look at the N72 and N73 east of Mallow....

This article is primarily about Metro North but there's a paragraph on the possibility of the M20 being brought forward as part of the Capital plan review here: http://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/metro-north-construction-may-be-brought-forward-1.2957390

"Sources said the M20 option is the least likely for a number of reasons.
Mr Donohoe’s revised capital plan will tie into Minister for Planning Simon Coveney’s upcoming national planning framework which aims to encourage population growth in a number of regional cities.
It does not want to encourage so-called “ribbon development” of small clusters of homes off any new road such as the M20 but to further develop Cork and Limerick, in terms of population and infrastructure.
    Restricting development
Planning restrictions – such as ensuring that the areas off the motorway are not zoned as residential – are an option if the M20 is to be developed.
A longer-term view, according to one source, would be to wait for the cities to grow before building the M20.
It was also pointed out, however, that building the motorway while restricting development along its route could also increase the population of Limerick and Cork. "
To say that I'm flabbergasted is an understatement. This makes no sense whatsoever.
    Thats, thats then.

We have a massive infrastructure deficit. If they won't fund vital projects, a levy should be put on fuel for several years for infrastructure only. To fund the fast forwarding of all vital projects in my opinion ... I'd prefer they sourced the money from elsewhere, but this being Ireland ...

Donohoe has always been against the M20 so this is nothing new, Dublin comes before the rest of the country as always. Will Shane Ross hold firm on the motorway though.

Lol that Dublin cOmesfirst. What have we got up to now as a European capital of over a million? At the moment two bloody disjointed light rail lines! My question is why have so many very expensive schemes like gort to tuam and the one currently under construction in Wexford... why the hell are they constructed years before far more crucial projects like m20, mn and du etc?!

    This is absolutely staggering.

Do they not realise that not building the infrastructure is what is inhibiting growth??

The ribbon development argument is a red herring too. That can easily be dealt with by the planning process.

That surely cannot be information from a legitimate political or departmental source?! It sounds more like the ramblings of a clueless jobsworth who happened to be on their own in the office when the newspaper rang for comment!

Where has ribbon development occurred along the motorway network?! Local Authorities were well and truly informed of their obligations towards appropriate planning policies relating to Motorways. It’s not like we’re going to see dormer bungalows built along a future M20 with driveways opening on to the hard shoulder!!

I’m struggling to recall a more ignorant or idiotic remark on an infrastructural project ever!! It really does seem as if they’ll try and spin whatever lie they can possibly think of in order to prevent this road being built!
