If you pre order online do you have to pay full whack?

    With who?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,678 ✭✭✭TrustedApple

Changed my pre order to Amazon fr. Zelda and my switch sent to me 310 euros.

That's more like it to be fair.

Being honest I don't know why people are saying this is to costly for a console I think it's cheap even if it's under powered.

Considering a iPad is near 600 euros then you have your Samsung and iPhones that a near a grand Sim free and have no problem paying that yearly I don't mind myself.

It's new tech you all ways pay more pay one for it. But I love my tech I have to have it all day 1

They take cc card details but say they won't charge card until you collect (that's pre-ordering online btw)

    Never mind :D

Considering a iPad is near 600 euros

Ah now. An iPad mini which is the same size as as switch sells for around €230!

as far as im aware smyths continue taking preorders beyond their allocation. i think its then first come first serve from the preorder list and any remaining people are bumped to priority when its back in stock, this is based on what i heard about the nes mini so perhaps it might not be 100%

    iPad mini 2 - from 309
    iPad mini 4 - from 449.

Where? I was looking at the iPad mini 4 recently and it's minimum €450 everywhere (and that is for the paltry 32 gb)

    Granted it's the 2 and they seem pricier than when I got mine a couple of years ago;

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-iPad-Mini-Wi-Fi-32GB-x/dp/B00GQVQ2UE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1485526067&sr=8-4&keywords=ipad+mini

    Still far far off €600!!

I was at a few midnight launches there.

I can see the iPad mini 2 as between 290-330 which came out in 2013. iPad mini 3 and 4 are still 450+ (in Ireland).

Why also are we only comparing screen size, I think it's fair to talk about the switch compared to a tablet, but price isn't only determined by screen size, I can get a Samsung tab S2 "10 which is around 500 or a Samsung S7 with a smaller screen for around 800. So I definitely don't accept the argument that we can only compare it to an item with a similar screen size.

Now if you can show me video games that are superior running on a sub €330 handheld or portable device then I think that would be a good place to start any argument with regards the cost of the Switch.

People (this is general not directed at you JP81) are living in cloud cuckoo land thinking that a brand new console, on day 1, given our tax rate, given the extremely low competition in the video game retail market in Ireland, given the current EUR-USD exchange rate, given that it's in the top 4 all time console release when adjusted for inflation, given the cost of a PS4, Xbox 1 or 3DS XL that you expect somehow on day 1 release for it to be cheaper than all these things.

I'm ranting boys, I've gone off the deep end.

Christ. You are ranting. I am merely pointing out the previous poster's comparison to a €600 iPad as a crazy comparison.:D

I actually agree with you, it's chalk and cheese. Even Nintendo aren't marketing it as a tablet.

On the subject of price I think it's actually not overtly expensive. A free copy of 1-2 Switch would have been perfect. The games and the extras are mighty pricey though.

Like I one who does not care about price as all. I paid 400 euros for my PS4 day 1 and then the same for my PS4 pro I had to get it day one as wonted to get the best use out of my 4k TV.

Like 330 Irish price is still keep for console and Handheld hybrid.

PS Vita with a memory card was 300 euros day one 5 years ago if that gives you a idea.

I just asked a guy in the store that I Click-n-collect PreOrdered into. He was wearing a tie, so he must have been important.

But not important enough to know how this is going to work. He has no idea (or more likely will not tell me) what their allocation is. He was fairly confident they could fulfill pre-orders on Day 1 till I told him there were only 2 million world wide. That prompted a bit of an aul' face rub. Anyhoo, with C&C you get a text and that means your unit is in store for collection - and at that point a reserve is put on the money on your card, released if you don't collect it.

He would not outright confirm that if you don't get the mail/text you shouldn't show up, but he wasn't pushing the Midnight launch on me :D

Also there's no way to pay to convert your pre-order to an in-store order, it would just be a separate back-of-the-queue pre-order.

Hmmmm.... maybe I should just finally play Minish Cap on the day

You should do that regardless, it's a great game!!! :D

Might start putting money onto a card to pay for it on the day...

Official Switch specifications released by Nintendo

    https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Nintendo-Switch/Specifications/Specifications-1176277.html#1

Most of it is known but noteworthy things are:

    - Using SDXC cards will require an online update
    - Switch battery can last for more than 6 hours
    - Headphone jack is also a mic jack.
    - It weighs 297g on it's own, 398g with Joy-Cons attached.
    - Charging time is approx 3 hours in Sleep mode.
    - You can 'manage friends' from the system itself, whatever that entails. It states "From the HOME Menu, you can start games and select game settings. In addition to managing friends and user accounts, you can also change your system settings here"

Gamestop Dundrum. Only pre ordered on the 18th so I'm hoping I'm still good to get it on launch day (I know they said any ordered after the 18th aren't guaranteed, but I have trust issues :pac: ). Doubtful of a midnight launch there, but I'm happy enough to wait until the day of to play it :D

This is a good indication that we wont have to talk through the nintendo app on your smartphone to voice chat, i hope anyway

Gamestop on Henry Street though at this point I'm fairly sure I'm going to skip it for a good while. I don't like its price, its weak specs as a console, what I've heard so far about online, expensive accessories and no real compelling game until Super Mario Odyssey. I've Zelda pre ordered for Wii U. First Nintendo home console missed since all the way back from the SNES on. It will be strange.

You know what's going to happen next. You'll just go along for the craic. And it'll be magic, and you'll get caught up in the moment - you'll buy one anyway. Then you'll need to sell it on, but you need to compensate yourself for petrol money, so you'll mark up the price. Then someone will over you 50 quid over your already inflated price, and you'll take it, and then you my friend will be a scalper. A god damned scalper!

There's only one thing you can do to save yourself.

Buy one at launch and open the box immediately so it's no longer resalable as new.
