I've more or less decided I'm packing it all in for FreeSat. Will ditch the landline too. Now to source the best deal for quality standalone BB

Liberty global who are virgin signed a long term Europe wide deal with discovery only last year so they must have a good working relationship. Sky customers here and the UK might now be looking to move to virgin.

I feel bad for discovery fans but if this increases the amount of SKY customers who either go FTA (do it, cut the cord!!!!!) or to Virgin then that will reduce SKYs overarching dominance on the TV market here in Ireland which would be very positive thing for consumers here in the long run.

some interesting reading here. Sky suffering with huge numbers leaving

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2017/01/26/sky-launch-full-pay-tv-broadband-struggles-hold-satellite-subscribers/
Chief executive Jeremy Darroch said: "Churn is not where we want it to be but we've got a good set of plans to bring it down."

The plans include the introduction of a loyalty programme, with the best rewards given to the longest-serving customers. Sky is also hoping to stem customer losses with its new mobile network service, which offers savings to pay-TV households.

Mr Darroch said the increase in churn was not an impediment to growth and partly reflected a rise in the proportion of Sky's customer base who only take broadband and are more likely to switch provider as a result. The company gained 140,000 broadband customers in the first half, but did not say how many satellite households it lost.

Sky is in the midst of a blazing public row with Discovery, the US media giant behind the TLC, Animal Planet and Eurosport channels, over fees. Discovery's dozen channels are due to for a blackout next week over the company's claims that Sky refuses to pay a fair prices for them.

Mr Darroch said Discovery was "just not hitting the big shows you would expect".

He did not rule out a deal before next week but said: "I would prefer to keep these sort of commercial conversations behind closed doors, I think that's where they belong. But it is what it is."

Fcuk sake, just as the British and World Superbikes will be coming back for the new season. We gave €200 euro upfront to BT last year for a years subscription for the MotoGP as well as the occasional UFC night. We had races on nearly every weekend for 8 months and I was counting down for it start again.

Does BT come any cheaper with Virgin?

Virgin don't carry BT Sport since last year.

Except cancellation calls to last a lot longer as sky screw people out of every cent they can before they leave.

They are not letting people out of contract over this.....

Completely agree on prices etc. but was anyone really paying for Sky for Discovery? They seem to have about 3 months content for the year at best.

Nope, there's a clause that says something to the lines of "packages may change without (or with limited) notice" ... EDIT: ooorrrr maybe they can per the above post? It'd be a new one if so and a potentially dangerous precedent for Sky to set.

Unless you are out of contract you can't cancel.. might be able to downgrade to the Original pack though?

Loosing Eurosport too which will be a big deal to some people. To me it's like my gym telling me they are closing the pool but still charging me the same amount. I don't use the pool much but it's nice to dip into it from time to time.

I see in the main thread in their forum that its hit and miss depending on the agent but no matter what way sky dress it up you are now loosing 13 channels you signed up to and paying the same money so they have changed your package which means you are entitled to cancel it without penalty and to make matters worse they are even saying over in the UK that they can cancel because of it.

Hmm yeah I suppose it was about the only platform you could get everything on for with Sport.

Sky need to realise that the majority of people really don't care about TV. Do a decent all in one bundle and find ways of leveraging the pay per view content.

The extract from the contract that someone in that thread posted would seem to suggest there's legit ground to cancel alright, and it seems Sky UK have confirmed this.

Sky Ireland have gone quiet on the subject since those earlier posts. Probably not sure what the story is themselves to be fair.

That contract is for Sky Q only tho. I am looking for the standard Sky contract to see what that states :)

So 4 HD channels will be going. Are they still charging 17.50 per month extra for the HD channels? Gave up on Sky HD a few years ago.

It would be interesting to see if Liberty global (Virgin) who now own F1 would leave Sky when the F1 contract comes up for renewal and keep it exclusive to there own platform.

Long wait, the contract isn't up for renewal until the 2025 F1 season

Weird post from the Sky rep about cancelling.
I've checked with the team managing this change.

They have reiterated that Sky does not consider this to be a material change to a customer's terms and conditions based on the viewing figures for the channels that may be impacted. We will continue to offer the widest range of high quality, award winning factual content, both through our original commissions and through our partner channels. We also have an incredible line-up of factual programming scheduled for the beginning of next year from partners like NatGeo, History and CI, as well as a great line-up of Sky Originals.

However we recognise that some customers may not feel the same. In circumstances where an individual customer thinks that theu have been materially disadvantaged then they would be entitled to end their contract. Such customers would need to give notice of their intention to terminate the contract by calling Sky (7 days' notice for Sky+ customers or immediately for Sky Q customers) at any time in the 52 days after the change takes effect. This right would obviously not coming into play until such time as the channels are removed from the Sky platform.

In other words, if you call up and say you will miss the channels they will let you cancel your contract.

Sounds like they're trying to deal with it on a case by case basis than a blanket acknowledgement that means customers could use that reasoning anytime a channel is removed or a package changes.

Maybe that is the reason Sky would not agree with Discovery terms .... they have plans in places to essentially replace the Discovery channels.

Article in the Irish Times here states that Discovery is backed by John Malone.
Discovery said it is now paid less by Sky than it was a decade ago. The Silver Spring, Maryland-based Discovery is backed by Irish-American billionaire John Malone, chairman of Virgin Media’s parent company Liberty Global.

Wonder if this has an impact on negotiations??

Hopefully if they do go the premium shows like Gold Rush, Deadliest Catch and Wheeler Dealers can find a new home on Netflix instead.

Unlikely as the channels will still be available on other platforms.

Their original content for tv shows is virtually non existent. Netflix for example average a new show about once a month sometimes 2. Sky have Fortitude (which is meh) and I think they co made the young pope.

Clearly all the money went on the premier league (which has declining ratings) so they are in trouble

What we could very well see is the Discovery channels/Eurosport becoming part of the BT Pack and remaining on the sky EPG behind the paywall.
