Nintendo doesn't compete with anyone. If they wanted to be competitive the Wii U would've launched more or less the same power as PS4 or Xbox One, they didn't, because they don't care.

And, as much as I hate to say it, the sales results of the Wii U bear that out. Like it or not, Nintendo are in competition with both the PS4 and Xbox One and when most people go to buy a console they're going to go for one of that three.

Now there are edge cases, like most people here I guess who will just buy everything (as much as I'm disappointed by the Switch launch line-up, I still have it pre-ordered with Amazon). But that small cohort of consumers wasn't enough to make the Wii U a success and Nintendo need to attract a wider audience.

Might be on my own here, but I've got most of my favourite SNES & NES games on Wii & WiiU. Don't need them again.

Just gimme Zelda. I really do need that.

Of course they compete. They manufacture video games!

They didn't release the Wii U with the hope that it would be everyone's favourite second console.

This idea that Nintendo don't care about the rivals is a bit ludicrous.

No they don't. Firstly they don't need to compete because their IP wins every time, secondly they haven't been in open competition with a console manufacturer since GameCube. They left behind the hardcore gamer and moved into family gaming time.

The Switch really needs to take the place of the 3DS because if it tires to compete with the PS4 and One it's going to get hammered. As it stands I don't see the Switch carving out a niche for itself the way the Wii did. If it becomes the 3DS successor and gets pokemon on there it has the entire handheld sector to itself.

Even then mobile has taken a massive chunk out of that market which is why they really need Pokémon on there and quick to grab that handheld audience.

I don't think that's the point. PS membership gives access to full recent games, and unlimited.

It's all personal perspective, but yeah, very very disappointed with the reveal. I'll gladly sit it out til at least next year. May just stick with the Wii U and get a PS4. Mobile gaming doesn't do anything for me but the portability around the house with the WiiU is perfect.

Yes they do. They compete in the same market as Sony and MS. Their approach is beside the point. Their pricing of the Switch further enforces that.

Their IPs clearly don't give them an edge, as the Wii U showed.

I hope Square releases Project Octopath Traveler on PC and mobile.

It's hard to know who they targeted in the initial trailer there was a total absence of kids or family but those joy cons are ideal for 5-10 year old hands. Nintendo are a business so of course they want to be successful & the WiiU was a disaster compared to a juggernaut predecessor which was lightning in a bottle & unlikely to be repeated. Hardcore gamers are their main audience audience they stood by them with the WiiU, they were the ones buying NES Classics for their family to enjoy. I can't see them getting back the family audience like they had on Wii as they now play on their phones, tablets or have moved on.
I think you saw them try to garner it with 1,2 Switch & ARMS but I didn't see anything bar Mario kart maybe.... to suggest it will. The parents buying this for their family will always see it as a console.
It's a tough sell when you can get a PS4 or one much cheaper come March, the base systems will probably get a price cut this year too. The games cost the same, the switch's built in memory is embarrassing compared to even a 500GB model & the extra controllers (important for local multiplayer) are just too expensive as well. I'm tempted to get one but I'm not rushing out to order it. If you don't get Zelda at launch its grim.

Argos won't list it till it's on sale

At most, keep an eye out for their in store leaflets. Sometimes they list stuff thats been added or coming to the stores rather than update their catalogue.

    Also, may put this here:

Fire Emblem Direct coming 18th January. No idea on content, we have had no hints at a future FE game outside of the mobile game.

You can order from the UK Argos site and have it delivered to a Parcel Motel address.

Nintendo should just give up on the hardware and move on to licencing their collection of IP.

They keep having these needless up hill battles trying to gain a foothold in the console market. There is Sony with 60 million PS4 customers ready to go. License the games to Sony. Over night Nintendo would finally be an incredible success with very little effort.

If only they thought of that! You should give them a call and tell them about your great idea.

I'm all up for discussion but the idea of random guys on a forum thinking they know so much better than a multi billion dollar company is kinda hilarious.

Maybe the decision whether to keep on battling with Sony and Microsoft for market share, or to just publish games on the PS4 and make tons of cash, is a little more complicated than you'd imagine.

Hey Retro. U hit the nail on the gead there mate. Well said. Thats exactly what they need. And any shortfall due to handheld folks moving onto phones/talblets can be made up from merger with the home console business.

Nintendo are now in their own market. They dont need to match PS4/X1 due to their heldheld business. The same way sony and MS are not able to fight with Nintendo in the handheld space. U got to believe there'll be no Vita replacement too.

If they can reach half of wiiu and 3ds combined and hit 40 million sales. therell be plenty 3rd party support as a result especially from 3rd partys that relied on 3DS software sales. Japan will be a homerun, US will be okay its the Europe market they really need to turn things around.

Im going to get some time with the Switch at Pax South in Texus in 2 weeks time. Hopefully ill be able to report back with some impressions for ye... :)

Actually, you have just highlighted the major issue with Nintendo. They think they know better than the average gamer. Telling us what we should want rather than giving us what we ask for.

You only have to look at Nintendo's ridiculous YouTube policy of stopping gamers sharing their experiences with other fans. Only carefully selected influencers who have Nintendo's permission can do so and they have to pay ninty tax for that privilege. Pure madness in this day and age. That alone highlights their arrogance just like your post does.

The price though might price them out of the handheld market. The initial 250 euro 3DS price really affected that system negatively and it's hardly the price a parent would be willing to spend on little johnny to play pokemon. It's still very much up in the air.

What's crazy if you won't a new 3ds xl and pokemon sun or moon it's still 250 euros crazy that the console is nearly 6 years old and really has not went down on price

Look at the Wii u now it'd still near 400 euros :O

Did I see somewhere that the version of FIFA will be a port of the PS3/360 version. So not only are EA concentrating on releasing a months old game but the last gen version. Bebetter if they hold off and just release 18

Sadly, touchscreen controls only work for experiences built around them
Take a classic game, or a game built for physical controls and shoehorn touchscreen controls in the package, it's a disaster.
Yes, you can use a Bluetooth controller, but the games are still relatively lightweight.
There has been relatively few seriously amazing games on phones, nothing like the numbers of titles appearing just since the 3DS debut, and with nothing like the complexity or depth.
Neither Sony or MS have managed to make a success of the handheld space, in the same way that Nokia, Tapwave, Gizmondo and others have failed in the past.

Nintendo's stock price is down 5.75% on the Tokyo stock exchange. Investors not too happy....

Was just thinking that early adopters will probably end up with a free copy of 1, 2 Switch as a make-up, after an early price cut.

Im sure you are lol. Well I have PS4Pro and X1 S too and they are both fine machines. But what can I say Im smithen with The WiiU and the Switch 😀

The Off TV play they both offer is one of big advantages they have over the other 2. Im happy the Switch takes that to a new level. Bring on March!

I was specifically talking about the decision to stay in the console game or not. That's why I quoted your post. Now you are shifting the goal posts to Ninty tax and youtube, Mother of God! There is a market for a Nintendo console so they are bringing the Switch out, its that simple. The rest of your post about arrogance and whatnot is just noise.

They way some of ye go on  if you're so strapped for cash that you can afford 330 and then 60 quid for a game, perhaps gaming isn't the hobby for you? I can see a thing wrong with the price, they kept it under 400, excepting 250 is just ludicrous.

So we should all accept that we're being fleeced for a console that includes no game in the bundle and accessories that are priced way too high?

    Nonsense.

I've an Xbox and a PS4 and I'm lucky to do so but why should I be expected to pay upwards of €400 for a console that includes no game?

With Scorpio due out later in the year, consumers are likely to take that 400 quid and save it for that instead and to be honest, I don't blame them.

I was hyped beyond belief for the Switch and it looked for all the world that Nintendo had learned from their mistakes but having seen that presentation, I can't help but feel deflated.

The price point is all wrong and turned me off instantly. Yeah, Zelda looks great and I'm looking forward to the new Mario but paying that amount of money right now makes no sense to me until they drop the price in a big way.
