I wouldn't worry about it, I doubt Groupon would be listing them if they thought they were all going to get seized.
I ordered one of the beer advent calendars a little over a week ago and it just arrived 10 minutes ago.

The box couldn't be more obviously full of beer, so if they wanted to seize it, surely they would have....

The best before date is March 2017 for all their beer cases as well so the beers probably aren't the freshest.

I just took out two beers there out of the box, and both best befores are next October. Id say that March date is just for reference, and even so, most German styles stand the test of time fairly well. IPAs would be a different story.

If its seized how are groupon.ie allowed offer it.
Because there is probably no law against advertising a third party seller.

Groupon know fine well there is a risk of them being seized, they must get reams of complaints when people have their stuff seized. There have been plenty of posts here about stuff being caught. The chancers in groupon think it is probably still worth their while to risk it.

Groupon are said to take 50% of the payment price from these 3rd party sellers.

The current sellers are these guys
    http://kalea.at/

Some seller could possibly have sorted the duty & vat in advance, but it would likely then be too expensive to be worth buying.

My only concern is getting a delivery or a refund I'd like everyone to make a few bob along the way to me getting what I'd consider a bargin. Are groupon that bad only ever got accommodation through them I think

I bought beer through groupon from these kalea guys earlier in the year and it arrived with no issues. Although a few days later than was promised.

In Dunnes Beacon last night. The following were on 4 for €9 (May have been more but none that interested me)

    Trouble Brewing Deception Golden Ale
    Trouble Brewing Sabotage IPA
    O'Haras Leann Follain
    O'Haras Stout
    O'Haras Red
    O'Haras Pale Ale
    O'Haras Notorious Red IPA
    Blacks of Kinsale Pale Ale
    Blacks of Kinsale Black IPA
    Blacks of Kinsale Rocketship IPA

Personally picked up: 4 Sabotage IPA, 8 Leann Follain, 4 Blacks KPA, 4 Blacks BIPA, 4 Blacks Rocketship

24 bottles of great Irish Craft beer for 44 euro (had a tenner Dunnes voucher) - Great Success!

This is such a great deal. Got similar to you except upped the Leann Folláin and also chucked in a Guinness Rye Pale Ale. The Guiness West Indies Porter and Dubliner also included in deal.

Also had 2 €1 off vouchers which worked too, so €42 for 24 bottles. Christmas and New Year sorted.

My groupon beer arrived. In same big box with beer tasting written all over. This is a list of the 24 beers . Checked them on ratebeer mainly average at best but at 24 beers for 29.99 you can't be far wrong

My Groupon order was cancelled before dispatch, and refunded. I reckon either customs are stopping too many of them and it is not worth their while sending them anymore or they threatened them with prosecution.

Why are they being stopped? They're from within the EU I thought.

I just noticed another email from Groupon ...

"Unfortunately the partner will be unable to process this order due to unexpected stock shortages."

... I suspect my made-up reason is closer to the truth.

I wouldn't be surprised to be honest if it was stock shortage. It could well be customs, but the deal is very good value so demand may be high. I noticed a lot of Americans checking in beers on untappd from the advent calendar (and mentioning advent calendar beer) so I suspect these guys are sending them everywhere.

I ordered 5 minikegs from Germany last week, big 30 kg box and it got in without issues. Delivered yesterday.

    Edit:
The offer is still available on groupon but only the 330ml bottles one the other options are gonr. I'd guess it is actually stock.

I ordered 2 only the one arrived so far...

I was in Lidl in Moore St yesterday, and they were selling Gauloise, a very nice Belgian beer.

In Moore St, they had the blonde, ambré, and double in stock; all quite nice, with ambré being the nicest IMO.

    Pack of four for €8

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭Lucena

Would agree with El Tarangu on the ambrée being the nicest.

Still a bit of a mark-up though, most 33cl bottles in Belgium would be only a shade over a euro.

not mark-up, duty. Pointless comparing beer prices in Ireland with prices in other countries, we have some of the highest alcohol duties in the world.

But we're snowed under with cheap alcohol, apparently

Anyone who thinks alcohol is cheap in Ireland has never been across the border, never mind further afield. Or is playing politics in the service of a vested interest...

It's certainly cheaper than when I was a student around 25 years ago. I remember a 50cl can of beer cost around a pound back then.

Nowadays, if you look at the slabs on sale in the run-up to Christmas, and even the beer on sale in the likes of Aldi and Lidl the whole year round, you can get a 50cl can for one euro. So taking into consideration inflation and the fact that a euro is less than a pound, beer is certainly cheaper.

No idea about spirits though, never drank them.

However, it's still a lot more expensive than on the continent.

Yeah, it's all relative. In relation to average disposable income, alcohol is quite possibly cheaper than it has ever been. In relation to prices in most other European countries though, it is pretty expensive.

Were far cheaper than the likes of Finland, Swedan and probably Norway,
An offo run in Finland cost me 35 euro and that didn't even do me for the night.

Yes, although beer excise here is lower than in the UK.

Yet prices are higher in RoI than NI.

    Only on strong beer.

2.8-7.5% its 21.42 per % per hectolitre in the UK; 2.8+ is 22.55 per % perhectolitre here

Over 7.5% its 27.81 per % per hectolitre vs still 22.55 here

    under 2.8 is 9.45 vs 11.27

There is then a 3% VAT increase across the board on the final figure here.

They also have a reduction for small brewers albeit its a sliding scale to 60,000 hectoltires whereas ours is flat to 40,000

    UK beer duty, March 2016

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/rates-and-allowance-excise-duty-alcohol-duty/alcohol-duty-rates-from-24-march-2014#beer

18.37 GBP per hectolitre per % alc

You quote 21.42? What currency is that?

    18.37 GBP at 0.85 means 21.61 euro.

Okay, I suspect your 21.42 is in euro?

Okay, so it's higher here today, but that has changed as the ER has changed.

At 80 pence, UK duty is 22.96 euro, higher than here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,775 ✭✭✭✭L1011

All my figures are in euro. The rate isn't 80p though, is it? Bit better to use real figures than ones you want to use. Even then the VAT rate covers the difference

Yes we were royally screwed back then. I went to Germany for a summer, beer in pubs cost about the same as here but off-licence beer was dirt cheap, an eye-opener...

We didn't sell much booze in supermarkets then and the importers/distributors/brewers were able to screw the customer with abandon. I don't blame the off-licences as they were forced to use the same limited range of suppliers. The margins (for brewers/distributors) on macro beer in those days must have been phenomenal.

Thank feck for the single market and German discount supermarkets keeping everyone else honest, so high duty levels aside we can be happy we're not being screwed by anyone except the taxman :)

Any chance of actual deals rather than a discussion on Excise Duty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 430 ✭✭Ruben Remus

I came upon a rather excellent deal yesterday.

Bottles of Trouble Brewing 'Dark Arts' porter were reduced to €1.59 in Lidl.

This was in the Galway store but I'd image it's probably the same in other Lidl branches.

Picked up a box of these in my local Lidl today. Great deal - thanks for the heads up!

Not in Bray, they are charging 2.99 still.

Did you check at the till? I've seen it numerous times where individual Lidl stores haven't the discounted price of a particular item on the shelf but the discount is still applied at checkout.

    +1
    But it's a nuisance nonetheless.
