From what Ive heard from friends through gv very recently, expect a 'boards.ie is the devil' talk on induction weekend

Sounds about right. Just look at the amount of Closed Accounts here once people get in.

You will indeed be given that talk. To be fair, if you have time whilst in GV to read or post on here then you're doing something wrong :p

Very true maj but it's the insight from those that have been through the factory that makes the difference on here. Folks like yourself :D

As long as you do not identify yourself, a colleague, bring the PSNI into disrepute or breach operational security you'll be grand. It is a public forum, I work in care and the social media monster has claimed many of my colleagues jobs because they weren't careful. Just use common sense.

No doubt the help goes a long way. I too benefited from it back in my early days. But take a break for 6 months. You earned it. Focus everything on GV and then come back when you're on the ground!

With regards to gym/running gear for GV, anyone any idea if it's still black and white, no large logos etc? Black trainers?

Yea still black items with small logos I'm not sure if black trainers were applicable but I wouldn't be surprised if they have to be a darker colour.

Trainers don't matter as long as they aren't offensive

Apologies for anything that sounds trivial. I am at ones and twos with all the forms. Did I hear correctly that you only fill out the forms relevant to you? So the travel privileges and f41 along with change of circumstances don't need filled out unless necessary? Any help is appreciated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Tackleberry1

What way do the travel privileges work? I've a feeling I may need them...

    that is my understanding......

sorry to point out the proverbial elephant in the room, is anyone aware of when the first months pay will arrive? just to make preparations and get an idea. because of the start date, are we likely to not get paid until the end of february? i have always been paid weekly so i know very little about how it works monthly never mind my new employers rules and regulations behind it. cheers in advance folks!

I have no knowledge of PSNI pay schedules but moving from weekly to monthly can be a challenge. I can see first pay being end of February.

However, for the first four weeks you have free food and shelter so it should soften the blow of the changeover :)

Good question for those attending the next induction.

You will be paid at the end of the month. You can apply to finance to have some paid up front if I remember correctly.

Oh really maj? half a months wages are coming end of January? And that's without applying for anything?

I'm pretty worried about the fitness I'm not a great runner at all and trying my best to get the practice in but it is playing in my mind!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭Nerves2016

    Dont worry about it PSNI...

I'm a keen runner but like yourself, the mind has been playing up lately....Hopefully there will be a wee running club/group of us happy to get together in the evenings, to do a few laps of G.V....i'm actually looking forward to challenging the hill run!!

This might be the stupidest question but on the induction weekend do you stay at garnerville or is it a day thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭Psni26

Thanks nerves, yep that would be helpful, I'm not looking forward to the hill thing lol

It's just 2 day induction you don't stay over

Do a quick 800m or so warm up.

Just find a nice steep hill and hit it with everything you have. Nice gentle jog to the bottom and then up you go again. Keep going until you can't go any further.

Remember 50% fitness is in your head. 90% can't push past the pain. Just dig deep.

    thanks for the tips!

Keep an eye out for the Couch to 5k (C25k) programs. I did it a few years ago; it builds you up from nothing to running 5k.

Check local running clubs as they might have one starting soon. Either that or there are plenty of apps out there.

If you're local to Belfast, there is a hill at Shawsbridge (from the car park go in the gate towards mary peters and turn right) if you conquer that hill, you'll conquer any hill. I would usually run it 2-3 times in my 5k loop.

Check out active NI website for C25K clubs, I did it in March last year and it was excellent.
