Was told i need a root canal/Crown and not composite Restoration

Hi All,

I chipped a tooth 10 years ago playing rugby, its chip once before and third time this Christmas and they usually just build it up with a composite restoration type filling.

This time i went to a Dental Clinic Chain and they didn't even ask me what happened or past history.

They told me a need a root canal and a crown and wouldn't listen to me when I tried to explain what usually happens.

Should I get a second opinion?

The fact that you feel you weren't listened to is actually the most concerning part.
You had a preconception& an expectation as to how your dental treatment would proceed. You verbalised this& seem to have been simply dismissed without any clear explanation.
Was this down to lack of time, listening, communication, what? Regardless, you should not proceed with treatment unless you're quite clear about why it's needed, & quite comfortable with the person performing it.

Why do you now need a root canal? Usually this is only required if the nerve of the tooth is dead or is dying. This can manifest itself In many ways... as a grey/black tooth, no response to extreme heat/extreme cold, a sinus or swelling on the gum directly over the root of the tooth, a radiographic sign of underlying infection.....was anything along these lines mentioned?
The majority of root treated teeth automatically then require crowns.

I went in. Was seated by Dental Nurse - dentist showed up behind me asked no questions did and examination / some X-rays and told me I need a root canal and crown. Tried to ask some questions and was just told a treatment schedule would be printed at desk and to book 45 min appointment. No real explanation of what's going on.

Not a great experience.

ThIs dentist could well be a fantastic practitioner clinically, but if they can't or won't communicate with you, & you're just ill at ease & also confused!, it's really better to move on.
You can request copies of the X rays that were taken; bring these to your next dentist.

So update.

I went somewhere else today and dentist cappe My tooth, they said the root is very much alive and that a crown is my a personal option that it would really be a strength decision.
