    Hi,

When I was looking at receivers a year or two ago I was told that an internal HDD is much better for recording. Now I am looking again and there seems to be a big price difference between boxes that record only to USB devices and boxes with internal HDD support.

Is recording to an external device still a bit dodgy? I'm looking for a good triple tuner (2 sat, 1 terrestrial) that I can use to watch and record television. Seems to be plenty without internal HDD for around the 100 euro mark and a few with internal HDD for more around the 300 mark.

doubt you'll get a tripple tuner for anywhere near 100 e
internal hdd is better and neater but
usb hdd for external should still be fine tho

There is zero difference between internal and external. I have both connected to my vu duo for many years

Thanks. This makes things easier. I have an unused external 1tb drive there and everything, although it has to be plugged in. Might just get a new one that doesn't.

    Would you recommend the Vu?

Zgemma are cheap for a reason I wouldn't recommend one to anyone after reading about them on a article a few months back.

I do agree with the Zero being overpriced,Edision OS mini would be a good solid alternative that is is well supported.

Just looking at that here: http://www.freetv.ie/edision-os-mini-combo/

Is it possible to add a second satellite tuner?

Can be bought from that site with a twin or treble tuner.

Thanks very much. Last question - I know what a CI slot and am happy enough that it's not listed here, but what is a smart card slot?

A subscription card can be used, its a lost in translation quirk.

Almost identical specification to the Edision Mini which is considerably cheaper and has wifi built in.
Zgemma are cheap for a reason I wouldn't recommend one to anyone after reading about them on a article a few months back.

Is that the article about them being a fire hazard ?
That's only scaremongering by a well known supplier ,they knock anything that they don't sell.

you read an article. i use said box. now who's viewpoint counts?

sorry to say the article was true about the early zgemma boxes been a fire risk as you could remove fuse and box would still power on.a well known person dealing with china with those boxes reported the issue and some changes were made.
boxes still have issues for so many users posted on many forums, how long do you expect to get out of these boxes as the quality is not there.

i buy boxes to work and view and not have many issues.

most people read or hear about boxes but do not check into them fully to see what lies ahead, could be worse like this one.

A lot of the people who post here are not novices when it comes to boxes.

    Whose viewpoint counts ?

Well I certainly would not dismiss the electronic engineer who discovered such a huge and dangerous short cut.

I would not trust an OEM who was releasing a PSU that still worked when the fuse removed. God knows what other surprises might be in store on the main board, not so obvious.

That the company that manufactures these (ADT) also released boxes under the Cloud Ibox name would be another black flag.

I would imagine it was the reason that Openvix wouldn't support Zgemma boxes. So "someone" went ahead anyway and hacked/patched the Openvix image for the MaxDigital XP1000 to run on the Zgemma boxes. Wonder who that someone was ?

Strange isn't it that the previous Icloud boxes also based their patches on the MK/MaxDigital schematics ?

As someone who doesnt sell boxes or work for the Vix team and who has went through countless boxes, including clones, I wouldn't recommend the Zgemmas. I'd also be slow to recommend a Vu+ as their price tag is not justified. The good news is that there is an in-between value for money range just as good from well established OEMs that I would trust not to burn my house down.

I have set up a few boxs for friends and they are happy with them.A fairly inexpensive box but it's seems well made and is well supported I would definitely recommend it.You can add a external hard drive if you need one ,it can't take an internal one (might not be an issue for you).

Shiiiite, bought one last week and I didn't know that :(

From first impressions with the Oneeyedwoman, I'd say it's relatively wife proof thus far.

just got an email from freetv.ie

10% off all orders if you use the code SANTA until the 14th of december
You must be logged into for the discount to work.

no idea if you could apply BOARDS and SANTA discount but i doubt the 2 codes would work together.

I'll ask here as it may get more views.

I have Duo 2 with BH 3.0.2 image.Over the last few days it has become very laggy (!) when I change channel or go to menu.
The waiting icon comes up on most channel changes and can be 30 second before it goes .
Any handy way to sort this or am I better off reloading the image ?
