Deleting large (backups from external hard drive)files

how can i do this safely, have a massive file of back ups on an external HD and want to delete them, but every time i go to it starts calculating the size and its taking hours and then it fails !

Can you format the drive ? If there's nothing else you need on it you could try that, or perhaps move any files you need to keep to another drive and then format it ?
