I don't know what was worse, Irvine losing the title at the final round or Salo surrendering a certain victory in Hockenheim.

Schumacher did not want Irvine to takeaway what he was hired to do,i reckon Michael could have won in Japan just as in Malaysia, the man looked invincible in that first race back.

On the flip side If Hakkinen didn't hit the wall in San Marino, be punted off at the first corner in Austria by Coulthard or spin off in Monza. oh 1999 how I miss you :D:D:D

Was looking though some of my old magazines at the weekend and came across this:

    Great season!

For all the talk about Alonso going to Mercedes does anybody think the one person who doesn't want him to partner Hamilton next year is Alonso himself?
    Don't think he'd fancy another 2007 again.

I used to buy that most weekends in around the 98, 99, 00 seasons before the interweb was heard of around here.
Used to leave them aside in the presses but my sisters used to do clean ups and they always disappeared.

A last shot at doing something decent in a decent car, his first decent car in a decade? Alonso would jump at the chance.

Humiliating Button all season was probably not stretching him. If he has an ounce of hunger he'd jump at it.

Hopefully he's as deluded as me and think the MightyMc's will be somewhat competitive next year. Alonso and Stoffy 3rd and 4th in Aus*

I'd like to think he would but I'm not so sure. If it was Hamilton that retired i don't doubt he'd try to get in there.
McLaren themselves said Alonso ain't going nowhere.
Most likely Wehrlein will get the seat.

They did an audio CD in 1998 with 10 driver interviews the night before the last race in suzuka. Good snapshot and review of the season

and some Ron Dennis at the end

I believe of 12 races where both mclaren cars finished, it's 7 to 5 to alonso this year.
The points certainly favour alonso granted but alonso had 3 retirements versus 6 for button.
Alonso in the points 9 times, button 7.
Factoring the retirements into it, humiliating Button he certainly wasn't.

    We can dream.
Unless the Red Bull and Ferrari put it up to Hamilton next year he could break records if he doesn't get a teammate to match him.

French GP to return in 2018 at Paul Ricard race track. Also standing starts are to be introduced next year as well. So any safety cars and all the cars will be starting from the grid again instead of the trailing starts at the moment where they all line up behind each other.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I did until June 2016, the price just kept creeping up and I just stopped buying it. Same with AutoSport magazine

Happy to see the French GP return, would have been nicer if at Magny Cours, but I guess in the middle of the countryside was not ideal.

Imagine that Mercedes DNA goes back to B.A.R and Tyrell originally.

Do Lewis and Nico indirectly thank the late Ken Tyrell for their success.

Tyrell to British American Racing/B.A.R to Honda to Brawn to Mercedes.

Not really, other than just being the next person the team was sold too, there's no link.
BAR was powered by HONDA... bit of a stretch to link Merc DNA to Honda???!!!.
The link for MercedesF1 goes back to Brawn only( powered by MercedesBenz) and Mercedes buying up Ross Brawn's Team. Pretty sure none of the Teams u mentioned were even powered by Mercedes.

Yes but alot of the staff I'd imagine go back along way at these teams.
EJ hired alot of the current force India team.

So how did Austria get their Grand Prix back? (Not complaining, looks gorgeous on telly)

    This too shall pass.

That was my reason for stopping, I'd still pick it up the odd time now though. Had a load of them from from 1997 to 2003. Used to pick up Motorsport News too as a cheaper alternative.

The point isn't that they were powered by Mercedes, it's that each team inherited experienced staff and pre-built facilities from the previous iterations, as well as avoiding having to pay a fee for new entrants. Mercedes wouldn't be at Brackley unless BAR hadn't spent loads of tobacco money building the facilities that they have now expanded upon.

Take qualifying into consideration. Button was sometimes lucky to get out of q1 in the second half of the season when Alonso was getting to q3 most of the time. There was a good 0.5 seconds between them in the last few races.

RedBull opened its wallet and paid the fees. Before that it was called A1 Ring and sponsored by the government, that couldn't afford it anymore. At first RedBull wanted to pay for it, but Bernie said it would be too expensive as all the tracks in asia and eastern europe wanted in urgently. Then the track was refurbished, after some lengthy legal battle that caused the original plans with an extension to the west to be altered.

Are they really going ahead with this? I thought the idea had been abandoned because of the delays it would cause i.e. Stop the cars on the grid, drivers trying to figure out which grid position is now theirs, engineers and equipment having to come back out of the garages etc.

Sounds fierce messy to me. Imagine something like that in the Brazil GP, with all the rain stoppages and safety cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,094 ✭✭✭✭flazio

My understanding of the original idea was the grid restart was only if the Grand Prix started behind the safety car due to poor weather. If the safety car was brought out in the middle of a race then the restart was to continue as is.
Could mean a lot more Virtual Safety Car rather than physical car.

    This too shall pass.

There was no link between Tyrrell and BAR. BAR just bought the entry and closed down Tyrrell.

But BAR, Honda, Brawn and Merc are all linked, by facilities and staff that have remained the same over the years.
Same as Team Enstone - Toleman\Benetton\Renault\Lotus\Renault are all connected.

I bought it from 1997 to before the start of the 2007 season - 120 issues. All gone to charity now. Was getting too expensive, and I wasn't always reading it. I read Racer now, only €14 for a digital sub.
