I didn't read that article yesterday, but taking five weeks off sounds daft to me. He's obviously decided to put this season behind him, but I presume his world ranking is doing to drop.

It's hardly daft, plenty of big events for him to finish the season.
He'll be back fresher with a clearer mind.

    Starting in 5 weeks

    Dunhill Links
    British Masters
    Portugal Masters
    WGC
    Turkish Airlines
    Nedbank
    Dubai

    I'd imagine he'll play 5 if not 6 of those 7 weeks.

The only worthwhile event he is missing is the Italian Open. Still, it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience to travel over to Milan for a week, surely

I agree. He's high enough up the Race to Dubai rankings to guarantee his place in the HSBC-WGC and a good run in the final few tournaments is not out of the question if he uses the next few weeks to regroup and refocus.

On the other hand, if he were to play in some of the European Tour events over the next few weeks and perform badly, this could hit his confidence even further and could possibly jeopardise his position in the year end top 50, which he needs to be sure of getting into next year's Masters.

Not sure what you mean by that 'comment'. He's currently 36th in the OWGR and 18th in the Race to Dubai. Cut off for the HSBC-WGC is 10th October. Top 50 in the OWGR and top 30 in the Race to Dubai on that date will qualify.

It's unlikely he'll drop below 50th in the OWGR by then, but even more unlikely (if not impossible) that he'll fall below 30th in the Race to Dubai rankings.

Truth be told I didn't know what the permutations were, I just shuddered to think that Shane would be taking anything for granted after his decision to go to Denmark. If it can go wrong it will go wrong at the moment for Shane. :)

With his tied 2nd at the us open, would he not be in anyways ?

    Hadn't thought of that!

People have been questioning Shane since he turned pro, most notably Ewan Murray the commentator,
He has proved everybody wrong, there is so many variables why pros pick and choose their events i really don't think anyone here can question his choices.
Just support such a fantastic naturally talented golfer, and unlike Mcilroy who changes his opinion like the wind, an extremley nice and affable guy

Not doubting anything you say there, but I thought he would have 'kicked on' in 2016 and picked up a couple of more wins. Think he is neutral at the moment, but may pick up something over the end of season hopefully.

From a gamblers point of view, he is extremely inconsistent

I hear you i had him backed at 80 to 1 at the us open  he said that result knocked him for six so i guess that took alot out of him, but he'll be back. You know what golf is like, so fickle and all about form

I think people who follow him closely and love the game question him purely because we want him to do as well as he possibly can. For the majority here we are not trying to criticize Shane but are more likely trying to understand.

He's going along quite nicely this week and hopefully laying the groundwork for a win in the next few weeks.

Shane has dropped another three places in the OWGR. Last week was looking promising for him at times, but let's hope he goes well in Portugal this week and stops this slide in the rankings.

He doesn't appear on the entry list for this week's tournament. This is a bit surprising, given that he is a recent winner of this tournament, but I guess he has his reasons.

+5 last night, disappointing end to the tournament, Shane needs to find his mojo soon

Yeah, he goes from a 65 yesterday to a 77 today, disappointing end but definitely encouraging signs.

followed shane and mcdowell in Melbourne for the world cup and he was by far the better of the two. Driving was excellent and very long, they were unlucky that a couple of putts didn't drop but I also thought Shane's iron play was very good

Down to 53 in OWGR. Faded over the weekend unfortunately but at least made the cut.

He actually moved up over the weekend having just barely made the cut. Hopefully, he'll kick on from here. Bound to be a bit rusty after such a long break.

His final round was pretty good on Sunday, so hopefully that will boos his confidence.

Good to see some form in the last round, thinkvhe had a 9 week break leading up to it so understandably rusty.

Hopefully he kicks on next week in Arizona and improves on last years 6th place. His WR could do with a nice high finish

Nice steady start for Shane so far today - 2 under for his first 9.

Did his finish in the US Open get him a spot in The Masters?

    Finished on 69, -2.

Yes and also him finishing top 50 for the previous calendar year.

So -5 now and they haven't shown him once yet tonight. And they show this guy Jon Rahm's every shot and he's at -2, I despair...

Rahm is in the marquee group, won last week and went to college in Arizona state. It was to be expected.

Did show lowrys tee shot on the 16th and he is now 6 under. Probably needs to pick up another one or two before his round is over to be in with a chance to win. A lot of players ahead of his atm

Thanks LuckyGent, explains a lot. Be nice to see a bit of Shane considering he was 66/1.... just sayin':D
