Ireland at Christmas

    I'm bringing someone home for Christmas who has never been in Ireland before so we're going to do some of the general tourism stuff (weather pending) but I'm also planning on going to Galway for the Christmas market and to Dublin for the New Years Eve events.

    Is there anything must see that you'd recommend is worth a trip anywhere in the country for the last week in December/first week in January?

    If in Dublin, crowds celebrating round Christchurch on New Year's Eve at midnight.

    (Used to be good, haven't gone in years, though)

    Don't come to Galway with high expectations of the market. It had a great first year and it has been down hill after that.

    Not sure what part of the country you are in - but Bunratty do a lovely job on making the folk park all Christmassy & you could kill two birds with one stone so to speak as you have the castle & the folk park and the Christmas theme as well. The 'Santa' piece is normally booked out early, but that is only a very small piece of it - the rest is open as normal & also open after Christmas. They also do special banquet nights around the Christmas that might be worth looking into.

    Another Dublin tradition is the "living crib" outside the Mansion House - real animals!

    It was split in two last year and it's just going to be a fraction of Eyre Square this year. They priced the more authentic vendors out of it so it's just overpriced knick knacks.
