Asterisks beside player names?

I've been wondering this for years, always thought it just meant a "Star" player, but a few days ago I saw it next to Hamann's name but not Owens. What exactly does it mean?

It means that the player is a Fan's Favourite

I.e. the fans know he's not the best player in the club but he could be a long serving member, or a young up-and-coming star, or just a really really nice guy

In previous versions it meant the player was just one of your stars.

I had Scaloni my DR for Deportivo, who was playing out of his skin for me, he was only worth a couple of million and was nowhere near as important as Tristan or Valeron or my big players, but was a fans favourite cos of his good performances.
