Can't start (or fix) 2012 Mac Mini

The startup screen gets to about 95% and stops.
I've tried to do that thing with the (is it) NVRAM (CMD-Option-P-R) but it doesn't help.
I've started up in safemode (CMD-R) but disk utility fails to repair the disk. I've no backup so Erasing the HD is out of the question, and I can't reinstall Sierra as "The Disk Is Locked".
Started in recovery mode but the start-up disk doesn't show up to unlock it.

    I'm snookered.

    Can anyone help?

If you have access to another Mac perhaps you could make a USB boot installer for Sierra. Once booted you could attach an external drive and hopefully be able to get you files off the internal drive ?

Sounds like the disk is faulty so be careful.

Had exactly the same problem with my MacBook pro, turns out hardrive had failed. I got a shop to replace it with a ssd, they were also able to recover a good bit of info from it and transfer it over.

Kind of having the same problem with my mac lads (macbook pro early 2011). Basically the hard-drive gave in on me but I managed to recover most of my info to an external hard drive.

I then ordered a new hard drive and have it installed in the mac but I don't seem to be able to boot from it. I can however boot from the external hard-drive without any issues.

Is there anyone that could help me get the new internal hard drive up and running? I don't seem to be able get a version of the latest operating software loaded onto it!
