went on to the Build your own VW site there - PP is gone from the options on the Golf :(

The A3s had its nip and tuck, the Leon and the Octavia (that new nose is horrendous) have been shown so it's only a matter of time before the new ones start popping up.

I'm surprised the configurator was updated tbh:D

They've really made a balls of the front end of the Octavia. Facelifts aren't always a good thing!

So the options are as follows :-

    1. Hold on to my existing GTi for another 3 years (2019 as per Joes post earlier), when the MK8 GTi or R is available, at which point mine will be worth very little?

    2. Change in the 172 reg period for another GTi or R, and get a pretty poor trade in, then trade again in 192 for the new MK8 R? That's 2 trade-in's in the next 3 years. Again very expensive.

    3. Get a new 5 series next year? Still expensive...

    4. Give up car ownership and start using a Go Car :(...
    Very similar dilemma.
I could splurge when the new m5 comes out but can I really justify that kind of money when the gti is fine for now. A mk8 could be all the car I ever need.

Do any of you have clifford car security installed on your car?

It's like an old e-class. I've seen a few mock ups of the RS that look ok ish but most pics are terrible. As if it wasn't fugly enough to begin with.

New M5? Probably triple the price of a Golf GTI/R, would never have thought someone considering a new shape M5 would compare it to a Golf.

    I assumed poster meant a regular 5 series.could have 3 golf R for price of m5 alright.
Are you using your R at all now or is it e30 all the way?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

E30 is my daily now, first day of winter just so till early days bit still enjoying it. I was on carzone/autotrader/revenue a good bit today though seeing how things are now with the sterling. Nothing grabbing just yet.

The golf R is gone now?

Well after 16,500km and many many punctures (6 in total) I have to get a new set of front tires in the next month or so. Dunlop sport maxx original tire on the car but I think I'll change.

What is the difference between Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 and Asymmetric 3?

What are opinions like on Michelin Pilot Sport 3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

6 punctures in 16k kms?! I don't recall having a puncture in the last 100k kms... what roads are you driving on? :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭Ron Burgundy II

I've mainly picked up the punctures when going on site. Previous cars I've never had to change a tire, just very unlucky with this car.

Also one of the punctures was a failure of a repair plug.

Thanks OSI, I'll have a look at the Continental

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,551 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Might be worth pricing them over the boarder if it's practical, with the weak sterling at present.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭Ron Burgundy II

Yeah not a bad idea. Any suggestions on retailers?

I have ContiSportContact 5 factory fitted to the R and no complaints. Far better than the bridgestones that were on the GTI both in terms of grip and wear. Still plenty of tread left on the fronts today, the fronts on the GTI were near the legal limit at the same mileage.

I'd try the likes of Kwik-Fit in Newry. I'm sure someone else will have other recommendations.

Beware kwik-fit shops if you're fussy about your alloys IMO...

I'd find it impossible to separate the 2's from the 3's i've 3's on the front 2's on the back.

When it comes time to replacing the rears i'll go with 2's due to the larger rim protector.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,086 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

I've assy 2s on the front of the octy, 20k km and still at 4.5mm which is good compared to the Bridgestones being there after 10k km. I'll be swapping them and the remaining Bridgestones off the back for 4 more.

Longtime lurker here, looking to get a GTI-P. I'm going to look at a 162 demo model at a main dealer, with about 6k on the clock; 5-door GTI-P with DSG box, metallic paint and standard seats & alloys. I would put it at about €42-€43k new. What would be a reasonable price for something like that, especially given the imminent facelift?

    36-38k I'd say?

Didn't get any bite on this. Was cleaning the R recently and the Gardai came by and got out to speak to me. Enquired about what security measures I have for it. Were saying they were a primary target and were speaking about recent incidents. They have a whole section dedicated to stolen cars. I asked about the Clifford security as thats what they were recommending to me. Considering it but would be eager to know if any of you are familiar with it?

I know people who've had Cliffords over the years. One was stolen anyway and I've heard of others. Mind you this was 4 or 5 years back but at the time the information on bypassing a Clifford was relatively easy to find.

    Scary...
Well the R already has a factory fitted alarm. I assume the Guards were talking about tracker systems.

I'd imagine they are a prime target especially in 5 door form. Serious get away cars. The old MK5s were a favourite of the criminal fraternity too. Speaking from experience too as I sold one a few years back and had detectives at my door less than 24 hours later.
