    It's just to caution you in case someone on the mainline wants to take the left lane. It's hardly a major problem.

    that is a situation where cars in the position you're referring to may want to take a left onto the R108 but get into the rightmost lane to head northbound on the M50, and it's just a signal that they must give way to cars already on the R108 who want to go southbound.
    i pass there regularly and there is a lot of chopping and changing of lanes which can occur.

    Yeah, makes it difficult if heading northbound on the M50, but not a major problem. As mentioned, expect lots of chopping and changing.
