So.. anyone tempted into changing for the 2017 model?

If so, what are you trading in and what have you ordered?

Any deals to be had? What are the trade in offers like?

What's different about it compared to this years one?
My grandparents have ordered for January but i didn't know there was a difference from the 2016 one.
They are trading a 131 Golf TDI with DSG for for a 1.2 TSI DSG for €11k. Apart from the Allstar upgrade the deal they got was through haggling. Their car is like new and they have bought from the same dealer many times over years.

Insurance renewal just came in for the golf R

What do you think of €716 ?

46 yo male no claims.points etc

I have the value at 40k from last year if i reduce to 35k will it make a bit of a difference ?

Initial thoughts are.....ye are getting old!

I don't think the value of your car will make a huge different tbh, as that is not what they pay out if you total the car. That only applies with an "agreed valuation" that would be more applicable on a classic policy.

I think it's just the hike that everyone is getting. Shop around obviously but getting near what you had last year might not be possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Shop around. And don't pay the first quote they give you.
I got my quote from my current crowd in July (about a month in advance) and it was for around 650 euro. I left it to one side, put on the long finger and then one day one of their reps called me and said if I pay now the premium would be 570 euro. Where did the 80 euro discount come from that I didn't even push for? Who knows. I think they pull the numbers from their arses tbh.
The value you put on the car is irrelevant. They'll only ever pay out it's market valuation in the event of a total loss anyway.

Im kind of tempted into getting an R for the 172 Reg period.

I got my Gti back in Aug 15 and have tiny miles on it, but ill still probably be fleased.

Don't think I could hold out until late 2018 for the next model ?

The facelifted version should be available for 172 I'd imagine. And even if the MK8 is launched in late 2018, it'll be Spring 2019 before you see it here and that'll likely be the "vanilla" models. The MK7 GTI didn't launch here until mid 2013... 6 months after the standard car. The R then didn't appear till early 2014.

Expect the worst I'd say. Any trade in value you get on a 15 reg car now will be the trade in value of a 2 year old car. Also with the drive by manufacturers like VW pushing cheap PCP deals on new cars to people who may have previously opted to buy a 1 or 2 year old car instead. Another thing that may be a factor too is that PCP only really took off here in the last 2 or 3 years so the first glut of 3 year old PCP cars will start coming back onto forecourts early next year.

Used car values are on the slide especially cars less than 2 years old.
Was in local BMW dealer today looking at the new 5 and sales guy told me they are very nervous re values and low balling all offers. He said they reckon brexit will keep sterling low and newish stuff from there will depress prices combined with pcp buyers returning. He reckons there is a lot of uncertainty so they are valuing trade ins much less than this time last year.

If only ! I'm looking at 5 series.

Makes a lot of sense what the BM sales man is saying. Lot of uncertainty ahead and 2nd hand market is going to be/already is a buyers market compared with not long ago where a decent 2nd hand car was hard to find keeping prices strong.

PCP particularly the amount of VW at 0% will have a huge negative effect on used values over the next 2 years.

Presume that is because they are stopping production of the current model and when the facelift is announced the order book will reopen for that.

Yeh although odd that orders could still be taken for a GTI PP/CS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,448 ✭✭✭fletch

The GTI PP/CS could be built in the system...the R couldn't....there were some (2) R's in stock though

The R maybe on a different production line to the GTi and they probably don't produce the same number of R as GTi so it's possible they are scaling down the R to change the production line to accommodate the facelift model. It's also possible that they have stopped making/ordering in specific pre facelfit R parts in the factory.

I think this is probably on the money.
The R has the AWD / Haldex setup so it probably does run down a different line, for part of it's production certainly. And Lapiz blue is unique to the R, so maybe they're discontinuing that colour. I read someplace that Carbon grey is no longer available either.

So the options are as follows :-

    1. Hold on to my existing GTi for another 3 years (2019 as per Joes post earlier), when the MK8 GTi or R is available, at which point mine will be worth very little?

    2. Change in the 172 reg period for another GTi or R, and get a pretty poor trade in, then trade again in 192 for the new MK8 R? That's 2 trade-in's in the next 3 years. Again very expensive.

    3. Get a new 5 series next year? Still expensive...

    4. Give up car ownership and start using a Go Car :(...

Depreciation does level out a bit after the first 2 years. MK6 GTI / GTD's still fetch strong money. I'd be inclined to go with option 1, your 4 year old low mileage GTI will be worth a bit more than "very little" :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,800 ✭✭✭carsfan2

With the mileage you do, holding on is the most sensible option. You have a nice spec that will be worth a bit as a 4 year old.
A new 5 would be a complete change of direction. It's huge and much more of a baby 7 series than before. A nice spec m sport 520d will be 60k I reckon.
Without wanting to sound like I'm trying to convert you to my new religion you could consider Bmw 330e which I recently got.very quick and comfortable and cost less than golf R would have for me with a few options.
If you do a lot of urban run around driving and not so many long trips they're great.
Most sensible is to hold on howeverlike Joe says.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

If considering the new 5, I would also think about waiting for the 530e. It will be a a fine motor, and I get the feeling it will be the new 520d on Irish roads.

What do ye think of this 2014 Cupra? Surely asking price is a more than a bit optimistic?

I test drove that car a while back. Ex-seat car, it's on a few reviews actually. I think the price isn't too far from the mark (maybe a grand or two?), getting someone to spend it private sale is going to be tough.
