    Greasy enough morning on the roads. Saw a dude on a brakeless fixie skid-stopping his way down the hill from Sandyford towards Dundrum.

    I had assumed they all died out. Literally.

    They haven't gone away, you know.

    anyone else noticed a lot of the 'car counter' wires on the roads on the northside/NCD in the last few weeks?
    do these just count vehicles, or are they calibrated to measure the weight and possible length of the vehicle also?

    Nope, we're still around.
    Ah, I miss the "are fixies stupid?" debates.

    Much more entertaining than hi-vis, helmets and what some other road user did or didn't do threads.

    I have been back on my track bike for the last two weeks. Cue my typical winter time swelling of leg muscles so a load of my trousers no longer fit properly.

    'leg muscles', indeed.

    Same thing on the south side as well. Traffic has been mental the last couple weeks, bumper to bumper all the way from Yellow House to the quays (including). Maybe the powers to be are trying to get some numbers of how much worse exactly it has become.

    London 6 day starts tonight with coverage on Eurosport

    Cav and Wiggo are headlining. Wonder if one of them will produce a sick-note?:p

    Can they identify individual cars? That would be a handy way of getting exact metrics on how many journeys and what proportion of journeys are under 5k, and if they could guess how many passengers by the weight of the car…

    Wait, I'm stupid; if they could do that, sure, they could go straight to every stolen car :o

    Heh. My understanding is that they work using air. When a tyre goes over the little tube, a certain amount of air gets squeezed out the end. Using the two tubes, they can then use mathematical trickery to determine not only the numbers of vehicles which pass over them, but the types of vehicles and their average speed.

    Big squeezy == big vehicle.
    Big squeezy x 2 == truck cab
    Big squeezy x 4 = truck & trailer
    Medium squeezy x 2 == lorry
    Tiny squeezy x 2 == bicycle

    And so forth.

    i've always assumed that when they cross the wires, they either break or complete a circuit to allow the car to be counted, and that the two wires are either there to allow the circuit, or less likely to give an estimate of speed.

    Did people come to any conclusion in the end in the great bike decals debate, about where was best to get them, which did the nicest decals, etc?

    What are your thoughts on fixie riders with no brakes wearing helmets with hi viz satchel bags and non matching wheelsets with red lights on the front and white lights on the back while wearing full kit and cycling on the footpad against the flow of traffic through red lights?

    I'm against cycling on footpads, anyway

    Was speaking to one of the derny "drivers" last year. A few UK guys had been roped in to help out and he was one of them. It was clear though that he was under an "understanding" not to get too involved - I'm guessing he was with one of the weaker riders. Looks different this year with a full complement of drivers "imported" from the continent. Not sure how that will work post Brexit:p

    Anyway, I'm planning on being there tomorrow, with a place in track centre, so may be able to have a chat with Wiggo if anyone has any questions they would like me to ask:pac:

    Going by the primary school in Blanch this morning on my way into work, there was a car pulling out after dropping kids off. On the left-hand side of the back window there was a Baby on Board sticker. On the right-hand side there was one that read "Smile if you're wearing no underwear".

    Is it mutually exclusive? I often cycle in bib shorts carrying kids in the trailer :D

    reduce unemployment, increased traffic who would guessed.

    I work from home two days week and when i do go in im in for 8am to avoid the 9am transport rush. It has been crazy since schools went back

    Yep, been getting crazy recently. Drove in this morning myself. Left at 7:15 in the expectation that I'd cruise in. Nope. Arrived in Leopardstown at 7:25 and the N11 was backed all the way up to there from UCD.

    So now if I do need to drive in, I'll have to leave before 7am. If I need to be in early, I may as well cycle in, it'll be just as quick.

    I would have thought with Brexit, they would have maybe moved it south of the border to have a base in the eurozone for easier trading with Europe, or maybe they plan this for France.
