    This city got hit with major earthquake in 20th century with huge casulties.

    And the naitonal hero born in the city was actually exiled from the country after he helped get it's independence.
    He was to die in exile just before he was due to return.

    Yes well done, it is Chillán in Chile.
    Fred was pretty close.

    It was hit by massive earthquake in 1939 that killed 30,000

    Oh and the national hero born there was none other than Bernardo O'Higgins.
    He of the Irish extraction who died in Peru just after he had been allowed back to Chile in 1842, but was too sick to travel.

    I would never have got it without the Bernardo O'Higgins clue.

    Can someone else take the next go, I'm going to be away for the next few days.
