Missed all the details of the Switch during the week, so I came here to see what that interesting controller was all about. Good to see that the months of leaked reports were correct regarding the NX being a portable console hybrid.

Initially this all seems gimmicky and uninteresting. Like the Wii U, I think this had flop written all over it. I hope I'm wrong. The controller looks intriguing, and the range of games looks very interesting. A new Mario or Zelda would definitely be something I want to play, but I couldn't justify spending €400/500 on this yet. I'm going to have to see a lot more before I'm seriously tempted, but already it doesn't look like this one is for me.

It's a shame because while it might not seem like it, I am a big Nintendo fan but I haven't "fit in" with the direction they've taken in recent years.

My first thought was that I hope this system doesn't herald the end of the 3DS and any future handheld replacement. The lack of compatibility with 3DS cartridges would suggest that it's not.

Curious as to what you mean by 'direction they've taken in recent years'? Do you mean motion controls with the Wii, or the second screen with the Wii-U gamepad, or not chasing the competition in terms of specs or something else? Nintendo have always done their own thing in that regard, which has it's pros and cons but ultimately is a good thing imo - we get a choice of something a bit different to MS and Sony - taking your first few steps in Mario Galaxy is unlike anything you'll get on another console for example. That's not to say they don't frustrate, like their archaic online infrastructure and and lack of 3rd party support with the Wii-U, or that their games don't appeal to some folks - nothing wrong with that.

Anyway as someone who's owned most consoles over the years (and games on PC also) I just follow the games that interest me and evaluate whether a particular machine has enough of them to warrant a purchase - with the current generation the PS4 & Wii-U did, the Xbox One hasn't yet (each to their own).

From the brief glimpse we've seen of the Switch so far I like it, they have my interest - whether they keep it only time will tell. I thought I read above that Nintendo might go silent again until the new year, I really hope that's not true - even if they come out and tell us there'll be a couple of directs going into more detail this side of Christmas. Whether I end up buying it at launch or later or not at all - I'd still like it to succeed because it gives us more choice.

May as well post this as more rumours have been added and it is summarised.
SWITCH RUMORS - MOTION CONTROL, MULTITOUCH SCREEN, DOCK SECRETS, BEYOND GOOD & EVIL 2 & MORE

All this info comes from Laura Kate Dale, who has proven herself extremely trustworthy with information. She has gone through multiple sources to get this information. Still, it's all rumor until Nintendo confirms. If you hit up the source link, you can see just how Laura got all this info.

    - Switch will be region-free
    - Joy-Cons will support motion control & rumble
    - Switch dev kits support Wiimotes
    - motion support will be confirmed closer to launch
    - the Splatoon and Mario Kart games will support motion
    - Breath of the Wild will support motion control for things like gyro aiming, steering, use of the magnet ability
    - the past six months have been legal and pre-development discussions between Ubisoft/Nintendo for Beyond Good & Evil 2
    - discussions included budget and direction, project scope, and how much of previous development efforts could be salvaged
    - October art teases were the result of the project reaching a point where all parties were confident they could re-announce it
    - Switch screen is a multitouch screen, used for menus, for drawing, for certain games
    - all Switch games need to be playable with the handheld in the console dock, all Switch games will be playable without touch
    - dock will have additional processing power
    - maximum battery life of three hours
    - price, release dates for regions, launch software and spec press releases are essentially ready for release

I think the three hour battery life might just be dev kits and that final unit should have more. Otherwise it'll be horrible. Brings memories of my Game Gear; at least it won't be eating 8 AAs.

    Game Gear Smame Gear,
You should see the typical battery life of a set of AAs in my Sega Nomad, pre-op! You could nearly hear them being drained of life!
I had it modded with a more efficient screen and modded the battery pack myself, using a camcorder battery and charger, I think it now lasts weeks where it's lifespan was previously measured in minutes.

Sorry, should have clarified that. I grew up on Nintendo consoles so I'd love to keep playing Mario et al, but the Wii-U didn't appeal to me at all. Pretty much what you mentioned above, but the motion control they've added to their games isn't something I've much of an interest in. Had a Wii and I found that when I wanted to chill out after a long day I didn't want to pick up a remote and a nunchuck.

I haven't had enough time with a Wii-U to fairly criticise it, but I didn't see an appeal in owning one. The time I've used it was with groups of people playing Mario Party and that was great craic. It just didn't seem like a console I'd ever use if I was playing solo.

Shame so many people feel this way, I've all three of the current gen machines and the Wii U is the one I play the most and spend 100's of hours on some games. In comparison in playing through the uncharted games for the first time but I just wish they would end already(I'm on 3). None of the big games on the Wii U made me feel that the game was a bit of a chore.

Cheers. Wasn't sure if I should sign up for the pre-pre-order but those positive reviews on Amazon swung it for me. ;)

This is the thing, people who reacted to the WiiU with disdain ended up denying themselves the best format for exclusives since the Snes was around.
They may not have been in quite the quantity that some may have wanted, but the quality was incredibly consistent, and it added new IP into the roster, from Wonder 101 to Splatoon.

Look then to the XB1 and PS4 and see how many exclusives those systems had, and things get rather more anaemic, you realise that there really was only one games machine on the market, the WiiU, with the other two being little more than PC's in a box with custom UIs to make them easier to use and DRM as standard.

Yeah it's a weird one and I get where people are coming from. I brought the Wii U to a friends house before and his brother(who was 30ish) refused to play Mario kart 8 or splatoon with us cause cartoony games weren't his thing. Unfortunately this is what most people see when they look at Nintendo stuff and they don't want to know.
If I was in my teens I'd probably feel the same way to be honest. Once realistic looking games with blood and gore came on the market the colourful looking games just weren't cool anymore and that hasn't gone away and is what Nintendo are known for. Sad but true.

Realistic looking games. Aye aye aye.

Yep, playing soldiers is in no way a kids game.

Good thing then that Call of Duty: Ghosts, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Deus Ex and Assassins Creed IV came to the WiiU.
Not to mention Bayonetta II on the WiiU, which is the only place you can play that incredible game.

Consoles really aren't the place that online shooters shine any way, with the PC being their home.
Doom would be a good example of what you are talking about though, and I'd be comforted by the developer list, a list that includes companies that have made such cute and cuddly titles as Dark Souls III, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 4 and Far Cry 4.

Yeah you know what I mean though, the stigma attached to Nintendo and its Mascots. See how PlayStation kinda buried crash Bandicoot as there own Mascot, I wouldn't be surprised if it were for similar reasons.

    Worse than that.
Sony tried for years to emulate MS with a Halo of their own, releasing drivel like Haze, Killzone, Resistance, none of which cut the mustard.
They tried too to come up with a homegrown mascot, Crash Bandicoot was one, and to some success, Crash Bandicoot 3 is a fantastic game, and was probably the last fantastic Crash game, some 18 years ago
With this generation their best effort was... Knack.... anyone play Knack?
Let me save you the trouble, I own it, it's sh1te.
Even with their more successful stuff, another Naughty Dog property Jak & Daxter, they had a good original title, then slowly sank down the drain with two increasingly dismal sequels.
The related title Ratchet and Clank, by Insomnia, was fun, and got a couple of very similar but entertaining sequels, and they've been bring sequels to the scene ever since, but broadly the same game each time.

The things that wound up hurting the WiiU was marketing, under powered hardware and resultant poor 3rd party support. Had Nintendo gone for it and produced a system that had all the idiosyncrasies they liked coupled with hardware that was as powerful as the competition combined with an ease of porting titles across, it would have been the system to own. It would at least have had the possibility of capturing that market of EA/Activision game junkies who don't care about system branding, just who they can frag/race, and always on the biggest games.

Let us hope that the Nintendo Switch will do what the Snes did, both host the best multiplatform titles, running without compromise, and the best Nintendo IP, all wrapped in an innovative form factor.

all that would be great. Hopefully they don't censor the blood from mortal combat. I was always envious of my megadrive friends with the blood.

    Interesting stuff

    http://letsplayvideogames.com/2016/10/report-how-nintendo-ensures-the-switch-slots-into-the-dock-correctly/

"We have heard reports from a single source regarding what the red and green highlighted ports are, but are seeking clarification from a second source before filling folk in on what we believe them to be".

That sort of sounds like potential extra processing power, but may be something else of course.

I have a feeling that, if Nintendo have any sense, we are going to see some expansion of the Splatoon brand.
I could see an action adventure being made with the wider Splatoon universe in mind, maybe with some inky/painty vehicular combat thrown in.
Also they would be crazy not to include an Inkling/Octarian driver or a Splatoon themed track/battle arena in the next Mario Kart.

I'm kind of happy the reveal took so long after the first announcement. Five months isn't that long to wait and we'll have further Directs in the meantime to wet the appetite.

No hint of irony though that while Karen brought her Nintendo to the party, the tweeter was presumably busy on her/his phone... tweeting!

It'll zip by in no time.
And, it should herald price cuts on everything with a WiiU logo on it, so should be able to plump out the collection for next to nothing too!!

    Only question is the 3DS....

While we know that the Switch is pitched at the types of games we all play on home consoles, where does it leave the 3DS, will game development switch to the Switch, won't the need for higher resolution assets mean that handheld gaming is going to die a death, as budgets increase?
Or is this no problem at all, as the market can tolerate both a on the go/stay at home Switch and a 3DS market at the same time?
